Up at the radio station Friday, got handed a promo copy of the latest offering from Primal Scream called 'Beautiful Future'.

Under the headphones as I type, giving it my first listen and the one thing that sticks out is that it's got a meaner .... more agro sound to that of which I have previously listened to (eg. Screamadelica).

Necro Hex Blues, Suicide Bomb, The Glory Of Love, Zombie Man & Can't Go Back all have "airplay" written over them and appear to be the strongest tracks on the album.

There are a couple of weaker soppy tracks sprinkled across the playlist and for that reason, I have to take some points off in my scoring.

I'm not sure that this will necessarily win them any new fans but it sure as hell won't disappoint the old ones.

The Sheik Says : 7/10

Definitely a different sound, Screamadelica had more of a 'roots' feel where as this one is more electronica & rockish guitar.

Think more in the Kasabian direction and you are getting near to this sound. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you like some of the indie Brit bands of the mid-late 90's

Every Primal Scream album has a different sound/feel but overall they are excellent.

I had the pleasure of seeing them last night - did anyone else catch them?

Here are live versions of a few of the show stoppers from their set at Billboard.

NO CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!!
NO CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!!

Yeah they were wicked last night and so damn loud as well. Everything they played from XTRMNR was just awesome. Kill All Hippies, Exterminator, Swastika Eyes, Shoot Speed/Kill Light and the deafening finale, Accelerator.

Higher Then The Sun and Movin' On Up from Screamadelica were great as were City and Deep Hit of Morning Sun from Evil Heat. Killer light show too...

As far as the band goes, XTRMNR is definitely their masterpiece, with Evil Heat and Sonic Flower Groove not far behind. Screamadelica is good, but pretty overrated for the most part. Beautiful Future is a great comeback album following the largely uninteresting Riot City Blues, even if the best track happens to be the bonus track Time Of The Assassins...

Yeah. Agree. Thanks to this thread I got into them a fair bit further and am impressed to say the least. Screamadelica is obviously sensational but other like Vanishing Point and Xtrmntr are really good records. I even like Give Out But Don't Give Up. It got a lot of criticism but I think was because of the change of direction.

Caught them in Brisbane. Opening with Kill All Hippies they gave the audience a 2 hour set that contained a fair few of their past triumphs and a little bit of their last release Beautiful Future. The title track should become a Scream regular if justice prevails. Some fan favourites such as Moving On Up, Higher Than The Sun, Rocks, Swastika Eyes, Uptown and Country Girls were presented. I personally enjoyed a thundering Exterminator with Mani's bass driving the song on. The concert ended with a raucous dedication to The Saints. They got a cheer from those of us that know that Bobby Gillespie knows a lot about music. With a white noise finish to the night I went away happy.

There is also a fan friendly book by Kris Needs about the Scream that is worth checking out.

P.S. Seen your pics in blog world and must say I am impressed. :thumbsu:

primal scream takes me back to my late teenage years

actually no... not really, i think i got into primal scream at the time they cooled off after xtrmntr

they've been around for a long time, i dont think i even bothered with beautiful future because they arent that relevant anymore

i saw them in london at brixton academy, i was extremely drunk that very night, but it was a hell of time i can tell you that
