Private Health is waste of money

If we took the 20% rebate they're getting and the MLS they avoid, plus the advertising and administrative costs they're forking out and put it into the public system, they, along with everyone else, would probably be better off overall.

It’s fact that we would be better off.
Increase the Medicare levy and ditch private health.
Invest in preventative health.

It's use is to skip what can be extremely long waiting lists for elective surgery in the public system.

Still not sure it's worth it and have considered dropping mine, then just pay if I ever really can't wait that long.
That’s what I do. Put what you would otherwise put into private health insurance into a contingency savings account and manage it yourself. If you need elective surgery and the wait list is problematic, pay from your contingency fund.

It’s cheaper.

If you've ever had tradies do a job on Insurance money compared to your own money, you'll know that you get best market value if the person receiving the service is directly involved.

Plus, I imagine the paperwork direct with the provider is easier than the paperwork with the insurance company.

All good and well until that expected $20,000 surgery suddenly becomes a $120,000 because of complications.

Given you're paying a MLS for not having PHI, why wouldn't you just buy PHI? It's cheaper.

We have an "OK" model

I was able to have 3 Knee reconstructions in my lifetime in the space of 3 weeks of the injuries, If I was in the public system, thats 3+ months. Meanwhile the public health system can deal with a lot more basic needs.

Was the knee reco needed? Well if I was to continue coaching basketball at an appropriate level, probably?

The Healthscope situation is a scam however

Sold off the property to rent back is gross, I wouldn't be mad if the Government made the new owners sell back the land at the price they purchased, I really don't think anything which was set up and help built by public money should be strip mined at the first sight of trouble

The medicare surcharge kills that idea for many people.
Yeah it’s definitely a disincentive, but the taxed funds at least go into consolidated revenue for public health infrastructure, research and projects rather than into surplus sports cars for senior executives at some private company

You're preaching to the choir, mate.

If I'm forced to pay roughly the same amount towards the medicare surcharge or private health insurance, it's not a difficult choice.

I wasn’t starting a shit fight.

It’s shitty that government want to put pressure on people to invest in private by placing a stealth price on what are meant to be universal health services, but that’s where we are at the moment. The biggest, and most successful endeavour by the Australian Government over the last three decades is shifting public money into private hands.
