What is everyones thoughts on private schools compared to public schools. I personally think that at a private school your child will have a better chance at gaining a better education but this can also depend on the child. I went from a private secondary school and finished my schooling at a public and noticed a huge difference.

Also would there be much difference between public and private primary schools as im trying to find a suitable school for my daughter. Is the extra money worth it?

As you said it depends on the child. I always thought there was a expected difference between the two schools. Such as quality of equipment, teaches, computers, bullying, etc. As long as the child has the right mindset it wouldn't matter much.

I have had plenty to do with a vairety of schools in and out of Australia, and went to private secondary school after a government primary school. IMO i think a private school makes it easier for students to achieve with regards to setting themselves up for higher education - but both are places where students can achieve.

At primary school level, the distinction is less visible and i can't see private primary schools as value for money - as you can find some brilliant public primary schools and the goals of a primary school are different from that of a private school.

It depends on the public school. Some of them are absolutely shite. I went to a small public school in the country, which usually rates as one of the highest public schools in the state when it comes to VCE scores at the end of the year, and my teachers were excellent, so I was lucky. I knew people who went away to private schools because public school wasn't good enough for their families, and despite them telling me that I'd never do well if I stayed, I proved them all wrong at the end (and did better than all but one). It depends on the child too, I guess.

In the future, if I have kids, I will not send them to a private school, but to an independent school or reputable public school. One of the main reasons is to do with religion, as a private school which is religious is definitely not something I want to be associated with, no matter how good the education they offer is (and really, not all of them are better). But I don't see the point in paying all that money for a private school education when a public school can (obviously, depending) offer the same things.

Anyway, what matters is that the student gets what they need out of it - either the VCE or the score, depending on what they want to do the next year - and they should be willing to work hard for that wherever they are. Because once you're in uni or in the workforce, high school really doesn't matter (except for the snobs, who will bring it up years later...but meh).

People who say private schools offer better extra-curricular programs or support or anything like that have not done their research about what public schools can offer.

I went to a public school and loved it hence my kids will be going to public because a) i cant justify spending the amount of money and b) private schools generally have more drugs (high school)

I went to a public high school where i used to live and the only other high school in the area was a private school. Yes there were drugs at our school and everytime drugs were found it was printed in our local paper, now everyone knew where to buy their drugs and it was from the kids at the private school, it was always hidden when a drug bust went down at the private school. We used to get the kids that were suspended/expelled coming to our school from the private school.

its the kids who choose their path not the school they go to IMO

You learn a lot more in private schools. Not just in the classroom but out of it. There are also a lot of services that private schools offer which public schools don't

A clever kid will do well, no matter the school. I think the thing with private schools is that they are able to get more out of kids who would usually be mid-range.

Yep, I think if there are kids who have potential to do well, they're more likely to try harder at a private school. If they're at a public school they may drop their heads and see that because lots of students around them are lazy, they can be too.

The real question should be a reputable public school vs Private School...

During my VCE my Public High School was top 10 in the state (Public Schools that is) and achieved quite high results. I certainly achieved reasonably high results.

That said if i am successful enough later in life (which thanks to my high enter and respectable Uni Course i hope to be) to afford to send my kids to a private school i certainly will.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but there are alot of snobs out there who will unfairly favour private schooled people over public. Not everyone but i dont think anyone can deny these people exist. I want my children to have every advantage, and not be subject to these disadvantages.

That said private schools will also offer better equiptment and facilities. They are better funded and generally will have better teachers.

I would imagine (i cant really say since i havent been to a private high school, just going on what i am told) that the culture would be more study oriented at private schools. Sure every school is going to have trouble makers and people that will do no work, but overall i would imagine it would be better at a private school...

Statistically it cant be a coincidence that these private schools always do so much better in VCE results than the public ones.

Ultimately it will depend on how study focused your child is but i still think if you can afford it a private school is the way to go. It will go to their head though. I don't mean to be stereotypical but nearly every single private school person i know are arrogant as hell.

I should of re phrased my question. I will 100% be sending my daughter to a private secondary school, but just wondering if its worth it to send her to the primary school section of this private school i will be sending her to later on. Prep starts at over $5k and goes up every year? Is it worth it? I want my daughter to have every possible advantage in life.

The private high schools in my are are no better than the public schools, in fact they are shyte. The best high school in terms is a public school.

In terms of primary education, private by a long margin in my area.

I dont think theres any point wasting time with the average private school down the road for secondary education, unless you have a child with interlectual/physical/mental disability etc. Better off to save up and send them to a top tier elite private school.

Well done for saying the exact thing I pointed out in my post as meaning you haven't done your research.

What do you "learn" in a private school that you can't learn in a public school?

I went to a public school. Unforturnately my father was the principal out at the same school as me. So I got picked on a fair bit.

Really IMO private school is a waste of money, in the end, it comes down to the student, not the school.
Also you might find that a study a few years ago showed that public school students are better prepared for uni and the real world then private schools are.
And from my experiance, not far off the mark

Private schools are better because they attract a better standard of teachers and also require a higher standard in teacher performance.

Public Primary Schools are good where the area is mostly middle class and the parents put in

a lot of private primary schools have great music/arts programs, but if thats not of huge importance then public would be just as good....academically theres very little difference

And nobody wants to say generally better Students and Parents.
The same reason why Melbourne/Sydney High do better

Sport is one thing that worries me, hopefully Howard or Rudd will turn that around

Does anyone have any feedback on McKinnon Secondary College?

I am generally in favour of private education mainly because of the extra curricular activities, supposedly more accountable teaching, etc however in future I will be living in the zone for McKinnon SC and have heard very good reports.

Please send her somewhere that teaches correct grammar, as evidently your private school didn't teach you that very well. ;)

LOL who uses correct grammar on a chat forum????

The interesting thing is John Monash College 10yr - 12. Will be open in 2010, on the Monash Uni Campus. Using the facilities of the Uni and the CSIRO

You are way off the mark here.

You learn much more life Skills in a Public School than you will ever learn in a Private School.

Private Schools are better if you are looking at going on to a Uni Degree. If you want to do an Apprenticeship/Traineeship then public schools are definately better.

Public Schools are also better because of their Special Ed Classes. Lots of kids have learning difficulties these days and Private Schools just do not offer any support for these kids.
