I recently got a new computer with Windows XP and it was running great until about a week ago, but now when I try to log in to windows it takes 2-3 minutes to 'load settings' or whatever it does.

This problem coincided with some mysterious folders just popping up in C Drive that seem to have come from nowhere. Things like 'Powerscan', 'Virtual Bouncer' and 'TargetSoft'. I just assumed they were things accidentally downloaded so I deleted them. The thing is, different folders kept appearing everytime the computer restarted and after deleting heaps of things the ones that are there now won't go away. They're called 'Sqwire', 'Toolbar' and 'Xerox'. When I try remove them I get a message saying 'Cannot delete...: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and the file is not currently in use'.

And the last problem I'm getting, which is the biggest pain of all, is now when I finally get into Windows the taskbar freezes up. I can't click start, or open any of the applications on the bar in the bottom left hand corner. It kicks in after about 10 minutes, but every now and then occasionaly freezes up for a couple of seconds. Does anyone know what's going on or know how to remedy the situation?

first to post again with absolutely no advice, just arrogance. sod off zeke.

as for the problem possumisagun, yes adaware and spybot are the best programs, and another piece of advice,

just because a popup may say click here for this that and the other, only download the programs u need, and have a good virus scan running at all times.

I have posted my advice many times before. It is preventative advice, not a band-aid fix.

It's a simple concept - purchase a reliable operating system which has strict software development guidlines and you won't have to put up with the problems.

yeah, do what Zeke says - go get Linux.

Forget Windoze, or Muc - they both suck arse

The alternative (and better) Unix based Os is MacOS X. :D

Uh huh. Either way, what you provide isn't "preventative advice" but the snide remarks of an ********. By the time people are asking questions here they already don't have a Mac - your evangelism just ****es people off.

I'm a Mac user by night (the corporate world has something of a dependence on Windows, alas), and Zeke is even annoying the hell out of ME!

Saying "buy something expensive that would have prevented the problem in the first place" is not very helpful to someone who needs a 5 minute solution.

And yes, ad-aware is your friend.
