Harry is still pretty raw, has some talent but another year on the rookie list will do him good. Theres not a chance he could take anyones place in the backline just yet. If need be im sure he will be the first player elavated off the list incase of an injury.

According to todays Herald Sun, Davies and Fanning have been promoted to the senior list. Is there any reason that anyone knows why Harry O'brien hasn't been promoted as well?

Space on the list.
We are using 5 picks in the draft and perhaps another one in the PSD.
Not enough room to fit Harry (yet)

Harry's not likely to play more than the 10 games he would be allowed to next year unless someone gets injured, in which case he can promoted to the senior list.

Davies is a chance to make our best 22, on the other hand, so it makes sense to elevate him. Fanning we didn't have a choice about, it was either elevate or delist, and we've put too much into him to delist him now..

At the moment, it's looking like we're already going to have to pick between pick #53 in the ND and pick #2 in the PSD - If we promoted Harry, we'd be picking between pick #37 and PSD pick #2, while having to pick up 4 rookies.

Knew that months ago, But no-one ever believed me. Only Davies and Fanning was promoted, it was reported on collingwoodfc.com.au for memory. O'Brien is okay, but we have over-rated him because of his background I am sure.

So that leaves us with 6 picks.

Eight players gone - Shaw, Morrison, Davidson, King, Cole, Woey, Lokan, Morrison and Williams. Two in - Fanning and Davies.

Five of our top six picks are good picks - top 40 picks - 2, 5, 21, 23, and 37.

That leaves the question about what to do with our sixth pick

Do we

Draft yet another young player at 53?
Draft an experienced player in the PSD pick 2?
Promote Harry - when's the cut-off? Can a rookie be promoted after the National Draft?

Good news is we are certain to pass on pick 69 which is a lottery so late in the draft.

Personally I think we've picked up enough kids and should look at Guerra or similar in the PSD.

Definately get a player in the PSD. There is enough decent players going around to almost pick 2 up in the PSD. But it would not have been worth dropping Freddy for (even though I do not think Freddy will see much gametime next year.)

Harry O'Brien -> most overrated player at Collingwood

to say that he is overrated is assuming that we know his qualities well. Same goes for saying he will be a gun, these are just predictions and we wont really know what we got till he plays 50 or so games!

IMO harry showed quite abit in the few games he played. That said i'm not against him remaining on the rookie list, there's no rush, and defence isnt exactly our weakest spot.

Agreed.

I am not concerned about our defence because we have so many defenders in the first place, but Harry has shown tremendous potential in his handful of AFL games so far.

I definitely think we made the right choice in promoting Fanning and Davies.

call it selective memory, but i dont really remember seeing obrien beaten in a 1 on 1. not to mention those 1 handed marks he was plucking against carlton...

If his progress continues i will start to get excited.

did fanning have to be elevated to the senior list this year because better option would be to leave him on the rookie list and have an extra pick because chances are richards will end up injured at some stage during the season.

After 2 years a rookie must be promoted or delisted.

They can also be re rookied for another 2 years which is what I would have done with Fanning. The risk is someone else takes but I'd have taken that risk. Then again I would have drafted for a real ruckman for each of the last 6 years.

But I think they have to go back into the 'pool' before we select them again (that is my understanding)

Correct Murray. Someone else can take them. We have second pick though. Personally I'd be surprised if he was the second best available but we could more than likely get him back onto the rookie list if we wated to. He certainly looks 2 years off being a senior AFL ruckman to me.

Fanning had to be promoted (he had spent two seasons on the rookie list in succession - 2004-2005 - he either had to be delisted or promoted).

Davies is probably slightly further ahead of O'Brien, given that there is a wing position up for grabs, and we could do with his skills, class and courage. A genuine ball magnet. I love watching Hertier player - good skills, shows some dash and adds some excitement to the game. His goal against the Roos in round 19 was a beauty. Will surely be promoted at the conclusion of 2006 (fulltime).

He'd have to be in the national draft as well though, I believe, and it wouldn't be inconceivable to see someone else have a look at him late in the draft.

It's not a big deal, we're already else drafting 5 or 6 players, plus 3 rookies. Using a pick late in the national draft or early in the rookie draft is not really that big of a deal.

Why? Plenty of players can’t nominate for the ND due to contractual ties which for that reason extend beyond draft date and they end up nominating for the PSD. Remember Nick Stevens? Obviously the rookie draft isn't the PSD but what is the difference? He has previously nominated becasue we drafted him so I presume he qualifies? Unless there is a specific rule I am not aware of which is more than possible.

I am almost positive that there is a specific rule that states that you have to have been eligible for the National Draft, and above the age of 18 (i.e. no bottom age players) to be eligible for the rookie draft.
