“Senior AFL players have on Tuesday night threatened to stand themselves down from the remainder of the AFL season if their families can’t attend the quarantined hubs which will be established in June.

“Richmond players were extremely vocal when told partners and children might not be able to attend the hubs.”

If the AFL season is unable to commence or is compromised because sufficient players are not happy with the proposed Hub arrangements, that's OK. I know its an old chestnut but what are people's thoughts regarding those players who choose to stand down, which of course is their right. Should they continue to be paid?

Yes they should get paid.

This hub has to be one of the most ridiculous ideas to ever to come out of the AFL. I know they're desperate to get it up and running again.. but under these circumstances? Really quite shocking. Away from family. Sub standard facilities. Held there against their own free will.

What a f joke.

If players say no to the proposed new employment arrangements then that is their perogative, however they should not be paid. They can get Job Keeper instead.
Can't believe how self-entitled some players are being. Perspective!

I want them playing anywhere ASAP and hope they get on with it, but is it the players desire to be with their families that is out of perspective or is it our desire to watch footy that is out of perspective. I think it's the latter.

Crikey! In the current circumstances you would think anyone would jump at getting paid big $$ to do what they love (playing footy), even it means living in a luxury resort away from family for 8 weeks or so. They should be grateful that they have a well paid job that they enjoy.

I completely get that some players want to put their family first and so they should. Us members are being told to suck it up though, so there has to be some middle group with the hubs. Whether that's by allowing families or holding hubs on a x weeks on, x weeks off type of situation or something else remains to be seen.

Unless they change the format I'm not for the hub at all. I have no interest in watching virtual prisoners play football.

The economic cost, management overhead, and mental health impact of running a detention centre, sorry quarantine hub, would be astronomical. Unless they can rejig the hub format so that it's less onerous then they should give the players the rest of the year off.

Madonna re.. I've been honest from the get go on here.. so no.. I have not dated her.. but if she had half the chance.. I don't think she'd hesitate and that re.

On Pay?

NB : Your comments are excellent by the way.

Thank you.

I'd pay the players a retainer. At the risk of sounding a bit too socialist, I'd make the retainer the same amount for all players. This is about guaranteeing that they can all pay their bills and put food on the table during 2020.

Why should they get paid? They're not working. They should get Job Keeper because they've effectively stood themselves sown under that scenario .

Your view doesn't take into account that their employer has changed their working conditions and not for the better. These are not the working conditions they signed off on but nor was this shitty situation caused by AFL mismanagement.

The players want a job next year, and they AFL doesn't want to lose them either. They'll negotiate as they already have.

Full pay is wrong, no pay is wrong.

there are so many people in society hurting right now who can’t pay rent, these guys are more privileged and not in that position.....yet! I worry about the rebound and what that looks like, will all Clubs make it, will some decent players no longer fit in a reduced competition. If I was playing I would do what I could to give it as much chance to rebound strongly across the board.

Why wouldn't they get paid?

Well they are being well paid for training at home and being with their families for what has and will be an extended period.

Should their employer, effectively the AFL, after careful consideration propose an arrangement whereby the season can get up and running and subsequently other people can get back to gainful employment, one could argue that they have an obligation to play, if only morally. Again though if a player chooses not to play that is his right. However should he be paid particularly if other players are prepared to play?

If I were an AFL player there's no way I'd do it. Even without a family or kids, I would have no interest in living in some hub for 20 weeks, purely because I would love coming home to my house and bed every single night. The AFL media trying to pressure the players into going into the hubs is so obvious and shameful, and embarrassing.

Fair comment. Mind you there are tens of thousands of other employees whose work conditions have changed and are now not getting paid. However my underlying question is that those players who VOLUNTARILY choose to stand down, which is their right, should they be paid?

I'd jump at the chance if I was not best 22 and looking to establish myself, but not if I was a seasoned pro.

Yeah fair point, many who are playing for their future will throw everything at the chance to play footy again, particularly if they have no parental obligations or anything like that. If I were in the shoes of a De Goey or a Stephenson or somebody like that, then nah I'm not interested. Take my salary if you want, but I'm not interested.

Yes the employer has changed the working environment, just as other employers have done. At my work for instance some staff have to work from home nowadays. We have no choice if we want to keep working and geting paid. The players are no different - if they can't adapt to the new way of working, then they can sit at home and get no pay.

Aahhh forgive me, I misunderstood.

IF the AFL create alternative working conditions that most players find fair and acceptable then the ones that stand down forfeit their pay unless they can demonstrate exceptional circumstances. I hesitate that I might be oversimplifying this.

Fair point. If you choose not to play, no pay. But I reckon the likes of senior players such as Dangerfield and Riewoldt who would threaten to stand down, would still expect to be paid. This is in essence the point I'm trying to make.
