Posted this in another thread and believe it to be pretty much represent the overall psyche of our midfield group... we have all the talent, but very little of the sacrifice.

I believe that our midfield as a group are incredibly selfish. Particularly guys like Murphy, Gibbs, Judd and Simpson. While they look good in getting stats going forward, none of them focus on the defensive or sacrificial aspects of working as a team. As long as they get their 30 touches, they think they're going alright. Meanwhile, other midfields, with depth of talent not fit to carry our boys boots, are cutting us up because they are prepared to sacrifice for each other.

Unless our blokes develop a culture teamwork and sacrifice for each other, we're going nowhere.

Need some hard nuts in our side to protect Judd. Which is one area on our list where we are very short on. Mitch Robbo, Scotland and....... no one else really springs to mind.

Tee up the tagger and let Marshmallow hoops run through him... no umpire is going to believe that hoops did it deliberately because of his reputation of being soft at the ball.

Best thing is that he would probably get off at the tribunal because they would be laughing so hard at the fact that hoops has knocked out a hard nut tagger.

Yes perceptions are heard to break, exactly. You keep sprucing the perception that he's tough, yet you just throw forward one 2 second play from a match ages ago. When i see repeat efforts of him putting his body into bad places then i'll believe it. Yes he's more mobile than Hadley & McLean yet i'm still waiting for him to dig into a pack like those two have both shown, seeing as though he's an inside mid like you say.

A poor mans Gibbs? Please. Gibbs is better in pretty much every respect, marking, kicking, in traffic, reading the play, AWARENESS.

Clearly Grigg is another one of your lovechilds, just like Dylan Buckley who you speak about like he is a part of the current Carlton squad, yet is still a year and a half away??

There must be a reason why he isn't getting a run if Browne gets a go ahead of him who also has no clear cut position when in our 22.

I agree with most of this. Grigg has done some good stuff off the ball and there is no doubt that he has gone in hard on occasion, but he has also chased kicks in the back half, made terrible decissions, butchered the ball etc. I quite like Grigg, he has definitely got a lot of upside an may yet become a very good player. Poor mans Gibbs, more like a destitute mans Gibbs I would have thought but certainly part of our future midfield.

It's not about being a tough nut, or even going out of our way to protect Judd...it's about competitive spirit and hunger for the contest. If our midfield unit plays with the manic desire for the football that we have seen on all too rare occasions so much of this stuff will take care of itself.

To right hard at the ball is a bloody good start.

Gibbs has deficiencies you have stated half of them in your post he is supposedly a leader has to go harder at the Footy.

I've always wondered if anyone is even given a specific instruction to block for Judd. What does Ratts think about a player doing this? who would know, he left Hadley to front the media about it after the game and hadders says yeah we should probably be doing more to help Juddy out.
Hardly sounds like a specfic plan is in place to do it.

Rowan Jones used to block for Judd all the time at WC and as we all know did a good job, others often helped out around stoppages too.

Maybe Ratts' thinking is every man for himself although that doesn't explain why they arn't helping out when opposition players won't let him up off the ground.

Its a shame to say but the last person I saw who would fly the flag regularly at the Blues apart from maybe Robbo was Cam Cloke.

I still remember a game at subi a few years back when Hoops put Matt Rosa to sleep with a perfectly timed hip and shoulder.

I remember laughing with a mate about how embarressed Rosa must have been when he realised he was knocked out by Hoops.

I agree with all of this. I am sure there is a plan but it is just not getting executed. I guess it was easier for WC as it is for Geelong since their set-plays around the stoppages are so well drilled. We are starting to get there but it will take some time and something needs to be done about protecting Judd etc from a hard tag right now. It is everyones responsibility but surely, if there is no one standing with him and tagger, someone should do something every time.

Also, on flying the flag, Waite regularly does that but it seems to be his own flag these days.

^Yes, he crossed my mind when I was trying to think of someone and I came to the same conclusion as you. Perhaps when he comes back from his latest break he can direct his ferocity at Judds tagger instead of nailing random players from the opposition.

Thoughts on whether this issue was addressed last night?

The umpires were a bit more aware, but also got the impression that the team were putting on a few more legitimate bumps and blocks.

Maybe a little bit but I don't think Judd had a hard tag TBH. He was tagging/going head to head with Black for some of the game.
