Ok I posted the thread earlier about PS2 games but I am now considering getting a x-box instead.
I dont know a hell of allot about either so from the learned of this board I would like to know the pros and cons of both and eventually which one each person thinks I should go with.

Ie price vs Performance
Games
Lastability
etc

THankyou

If you're just casual gamer (which i assume you are), then i'd probably go for a PS2 - not because it's the best (it's not) but because it will more than likely "win" the console war. More people are aware of it - thus, more people will buy it and more games will be developed for it.

But even then, it's hard to say. I've got a Dreamcast and a PS2 at the moment, with the X-Box next on my list. I've been playing a JAP GameCube lately as well and that's nice, but unless you're a fan of Nintendo games, then i'd steer clear for the time being as the games just aren't there......yet.

What kind of games are you into? Are you into online games? I'm waiting to see if i can use my cable connection with the X-Box before i buy one. It's apparently broadband-ready straight out of the box, but i'm not sure whether you'll be able to use your choice of ISP with it yet.

But then, the PS2 modem will be released soon as well. But there's no knowing if it will take off over here.

Like i said - it's hard to say. Each system will have it's strengths and weaknesses. If you want the "best" console, then go for the X-Box, but whether that will turn out to be the best console for a casual gamer is unknown at the moment.

Ask me in a year. :)

ive actually played both, owned a ps2 until a few weeks ago and played an xbox in december. the reason i sold my ps2 was so that it will help me in saving up for an xbox which i thought was a better games machine even after playing those few games. the major set back for the time being will be the games available over here at launch, although i think there will be more at the time of launch than there was when the ps2 was launched.
price......well the xbox will obviously be more expensive when its relesased here than the ps2 will be at the same time, so if thats a major influence to you, then i would go the ps2 as youll be able to pick up a couple of extra games also.
as gphonque said, itll be up to whether you either want the cheaper machine with the games that are already available, or the new machine that is more powerful.:)

I think (i read it about a month ago) that the X-Box launch price in Aus will be $650. Not a bad price. :) (although once you add another controller and a few games, it quickly becomes pretty expensive..... :( )

which one would u get

I own a playstation 2 and am enjoying it. The games are still rather expensive which is why i've bought a few Playstation 1 games (great value). I never owned a playstation previously so The old games are new to me.

The Playstation 2 is also a limited (Pal Zone 4 only) DVD player also which is handy and will play most DVD's bought in Australia.

Can the X-box play DVD's?

Which one buddy??

I can't decide for you man. :)

It's up to you. I'll end up buying all the consoles so it's not something i've had to think about.

It's a hard decision because nobody knows what's going to happen, or which console is going to be THE console. (if any of them are.)

This is the first time that there's really been 3 big consoles in the same gen - and the first time Microsoft have been involved.

No matter which system you get, there'll be some fantastic games. There's already a shhitload of "must have" games on all the consoles already. (for me - GameCube has Super Monkey Ball, PS2 had Pro Evolution, GT3 etc, and X-Box has Jet Set Radio Future..........plus others of course.) It all depends on what you like playing, and which games end up on certain consoles.

The only way you'll know is to wait until all 3 consoles are out and go and play them for yourself.

OR, take a risk and buy one now.

OR, buy all of them and then you won't have a problem. (nor will you have any money.)

OR, you could always buy a cheap Dreamcast to keep you busy for a few months until you've decided which new console you want to get. ;)

Seriously, if you're not sure - wait. You don't want to buy a PS2 now and then realise a month later that you would have prefered an X-Box.

cheers

Spoken like a true politician.
Look I am not goign to hold you personally responsible, like you said I will be happy with either.
You have 1300, your going to spend the majority of your time playing the system with mates in multiplayer.
Which one do u get???

Agreed.

Two Words - Mario & Zelda.

I own a PS2, but it's simply to pass the time until the Cube arrives.
Plus it'll be half the price of the X-Box.

Game Console Confusion
Scribbled by Patrick Stuart

Xbox - too new, only a few games and a planned obsolescence model (wait
for Xbox II) Frankly, the Xbox specs where impressive from the PC world
over 2 years ago. Now, it's too slow to run the latest games for the PC.
Microsoft's biggest push when promoting the Xbox when it announced it
was the fact that PC game companies could easily port their games [over]
to the Xbox. That may be true, but now that the specs are that of a slow
computer (733 MHz PIII processor, 10 GB HD, etc.), all you are buying is
an old computer with a great video card to play PC games. Also, Xbox is
only the start from Microsoft; there is more to come. Think TiVo and
Xbox combined. If you like the Xbox, wait for the next model - which
will make it more complete towards Christmas.

GameCube - if you like kids games or simple games, then this might be
the box. Have a GBA (GameBoy Advanced)? Then they work together.
Graphics are not impressive, controllers are awkward, but give it a
chance. Granted, there are "adult" games for the GameCube, but unless
you want something with a handle and small discs to take over to your
friend's house, the GameCube just doesn't hold a candle to a PS2 or
Xbox. I would encourage you to look at it, since it does have some niche
games that you won't find on other platforms (Luigi's Mansion, Zelda,
etc.).

PS2 - hundreds of games, problem is picking the best ones.
Backwards-compatible with PS1 games. Great controllers, expandability
coming, will be able to run Linux later this year. USB ports, Firewire
ports, soon a Hard drive and network card. Plays DVD's at no extra cost.
Dolby 5.1 digital outputs (Makes sound great)! Component video out (5
wires to your TV) for great video. Games: Grand Theft Auto 3, Final
Fantasy 10, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, any EA Sports Game, SSX
Tricky, and so many more. What are the PS2's downsides? Some say it's
slow and doesn't have enough memory, etc. True, but here's the facts:
don't be swayed by the MHz myth.

Speed of a machine doesn't mean everything. Games are specifically
written for the "emotion engine" that the PS2 has - not just PC games
moved to the Xbox. In a way, this is what separates the PS2 and GameCube
from the Xbox. Also, we are now seeing 2nd generation games that are
pushing the limits of the PS2 and it is doing some amazing things no one
thought would be possible when it launched. Xbox has a Hard drive. True,
but so will the PS2 this summer, and really, what are you going to use
the hard drive for? Save games? Caching the game data to give the
allusion that the Xbox is faster than it really is? The Xbox can play
DVD's as well. True, but you have to spend $30 to add that option. Of
course, you do need a memory card for a PS2 to play DVDs as well.

So my recommendation: go with a PS2 you won't regret it. If you can
afford it, buy both a PS2 and a GameCube. If you can only afford one
machine and want to play DVDs, the PS2 wins. If you want to play the
Mario-type games, then the GameCube wins. I've played them all, and to
be completely honest, the Xbox was failed from the start. It will
succeed - eventually - but right now, the only two serious platforms are
the PS2 and GameCube. One of the other reasons I failed to mention was
based on the fact that these are Japanese-developed consoles with years
of experience in the gaming world. Microsoft is new to the arena, and
doesn't have [many] Japanese ties yet. One other thing to consider is
possibly renting each system from a video rental place for a couple of
days with a few headline games. Then you will know for sure which one
you truly like.

Have to disagree with that.

A mate of mine actually has an imported Cube, and the graphics blow the PS2 away, and are on par with the X-Box.
And the controller is the best available. Especially compared to the X-Box's which is like a brick.

Sabre, if you're mainly interested in multiplayer, remember that the PS2 only has two controller ports. The X-Box and Cube have Four.

But if you've narrowed it down to PS2 or X-Box, I'd go with PS2 simply for the huge number of quality games.

Christ, how much did Sony pay him to write that?

That has to be one of the most blatantly biased articles i've ever read on the new console gen.

Amongst countless other things, he makes no mention of the real time surround capabilities of the Xbox, yet he makes a point of mentioning the PS2's surround - "makes sound great!" - even though the PS2 is unable to use surround in real time. (ie. you'll only ever hear 5.1 when watching a dvd, or during a pre-rendered fmv scene in a game.)

Also, as TheRealBuzz pointed out - no mention of the fact that both GameCube and Xbox have four controller ports vs the PS2's two.

He actually seems to believe that the PS2 competes technically next to the GCN and the Xbox!

", but now that the specs are that of a slow

yeah, vs the PS2's 294 Mhz processor. (also conveniently left out.)

Sabre - Nobody in their right mind would be able to confidently suggest to you which console to buy at the moment without letting their personal bias choose for them. That is, if you only want to buy one console. If you plan on buying another one in 6 months or a year, then go get a PS2 now. But if you only want one, i'd wait.

None of these consoles are shhit, and despite what Mr Patrick Stuart might think of the Xbox, it's perhaps the most promising of them all, and is certaintly the most powerful of them all. Put the name "Microsoft" behind it and it's almost guaranteed to be huge.

There are two certainties:

The PS2 will get the most games, and the PS2 will also get the most shhit games.

My recommendation - wait.

Or buy a cheap Dreamcast to pass the time.

Each one has its clear advantages/disadvantages.

Xbox - High price, a controller costs $70 which is too steep. However if you have the money it is the most powerful of the consoles and looks to have some good games coming like Duke Nukem Forever and Halo which has got some killer reviews. Probably aimed at current PC gamers (my observation).

GameCube - Quite obviously aimed at the kids and will probably do ok because of its price alone.

PS2 - A mixture of both, where the XBox is probably aimed more at older gamers and GC young the PS2 is in the middle somewhere. You can pick up a second hand PS2 for the same price as a GC these days (around $400) which is a good pickup.

I know I havent helped but I wanted my 2 bobs worth.

At the moment though I have a Dreamcast. Great games and very cheap.

gPhonque what games do you reccomend? Any good first person shooters? I know Q3 and Unreal Tournament are more multi player/online orientated so Im not really considering them.

What kind of games are you into?

What games do you have?

I could recommend a heap of games, but whether they'd be the sort of games you're into, i don't know. I'm not particularly into 1st person shooters. Q3 is the one i've had the most fun with on the DC though. (there's also Outrigger by Sega AM2 who did Shenmue, Ferrari etc, but i couldn't get into it at all.)

Anyway - here's a small list of games that no DC owner should be without: Rez, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue 1 and 2, Ferrari 355, Daytona 2001, Test Drive Lemans, Soul Calibur, Zero Gunner 2, Mars Matrix, NBA2k2, Powerstone 2, Virtua Tennis, Tennis 2k2, Capcom Vs SNK 1 and 2.

Why must people stereotype game consoles.

Mario64 & Zelda64 are considered 'Kid Games', but that doesn't change the fact that they both revolutionised their genre and have had every gaming company in the world blatantly rip off their new ideas.

Let's not forget, video games are ALL essentially for kids and adults who sometimes like to feel like kids.

There's nothing mature about video games. :)

Hey don't get me wrong. I love my video games.

It just amuses me that people categorise Mario and Zelda as immature, and something like Grand Theft Auto as mature.
There's nothing mature about mindless violence and unnecessary swearing.

Sure GTA is fun to play, but so is Mario. So don't let stereotypes cloud your judgement when buying a game console.

The games I own are

-Virtua Tennis
-Virtua Striker 2
-Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
-Daytona USA 2001 Deluxe
-NBA 2K
-NFL Blitz
-4 Wheel Thunder

A few of them were only good for a week or two of fun but Virtua Tennis is easily my fav at the moment and I am looking at importing Tennis 2K2. Daytona is pretty good too.

What Im looking for is something different to the above, something like Resident Evil or Soul Calibur. Can you reccomend something( what is Zero Gunner 2)? because the bastards at DC IGN have made it so you have to be in Insider to read any review.

BTW, is the fishing game any good? I think it could work if you have the rod too, something different.
