Just do the heat gun thing, it is real easy. There are other things you can do but they're unreliable and only work in about 1% of cases.

Cheers mate will give it a go...worried about pulling the whole ps3 part and putting it back together.

When I was pulling mine apart I snapped off the clip that holds the blu-ray ribbon to the motherboard, now it's held in with tape and I never get full functionality. I can now either get video with no sound, sound with no video, or sound and video but I can't put a disc in. But the YLOD is gone. Other than that everything is easy to pull apart and put back together, there's no confusing parts and everything slots in nicely.

I pulled my PS2 apart once....didn't fix it either, I ended up just forgetting it existed.

Is YLOD only something that effects the first generation of PS3's?

My Ps2 issue was that the vent on the back let in far too much dust. They remedied this after a few months, but I bought the thing when they were the golden child of new gaming.

YLOD can effect every gen of PS3. The older ones get it more because it takes time to wear down but it's a flaw in the way the PS3 is built that means it's just a matter of time before every PS3 gets it.

Well, that's nice to know.
Considering I bought a 40gig on the cheap....

Might be time for an upgrade soo anyway.

Newbie question: Is there a way of transfering all game and data to a newer PS3?

I Don't know from experience but I have been told it's just taking out the hard drive and connecting it too a tower, backing it up like you would a laptop hard drive then transferring it over to the new hard drive.

Cheers Fev, that's one for me to check out in time. Looks like it's too late for me to get the data off my housemates Ps3 though, as it will delete everything I've got on my current system.

Got to have a play of the new AFL LIVE game being developed by BigAntStudios last week.

I'll say straight up that I've not pre-ordered the game, and am still deciding whether I will indeed pick it up. That being said....

There's plenty to like, including very realistic modelling of AFL players, even down to the huge snoz on Pavlich, or the artwork on Dane Swans arm.......the likeness for all players though is incredible. As soon as you see the face, you know the player.

The gameplay was hard to get a handle on initially, as there was 6 of us trying the game on for the first time, and as much as we were eager to play the game we were also terribly 'new' at it, meaning that for the most part it was a scrappy contest with lots of tackling and packs converging on the ball.

The thing with a game like AFL is that it's full of grey areas. There's so many little intricacies involved in a realtime game of AFL, and when trying to convert that into something playable the task of defining and controlling these minute 'plays' was one that BigAnt recognised early as a real challenge. But it works, and that's the thing, whether it's jumping up in the ruck and directing the ball to the rover who's standing behind you, or running through the middle and giving a 'don't argue' to the tacker coming at you, it's in here. You've just got to master it.
The game works very closely on the mechanics of FIFA, making it instantly playable for the most part. You can pick up the controller and be running and kicking the ball to a teammate in seconds, but it's that next level of gameplay that could really lift this game to great heights.
Whereas many sporting games of yesteryear relied on the trusted "button A = kick, button B = shoot", AFL LIVE has numerous instances of button combinations creating different 'plays'.
This to me will ultimately define just how well the game is received.

One thing to be remembered though is that this game is a foundation. Put simply, it's the very basis of where the AFL LIVE series will start. It's not going to be on the same level of sporting games with 4 and 5 years behind it, ala NBA LIVE, FIFA etc. It's an entry level game with big ideas, and although the ambition is big, they've hit extremely close to the mark.

As I said earlier, I'm not sold on the game like others who went that day are, but that's probably more to do with the amount of people who were trying to play the game that day, than the game itself.
I think this game will probably excel with a 1v1 or 2v2 set up, but 3v3 was just too muddy to be truly enjoyable....especially when we were all still learning.

Nah, it's on PC and XBOX 360 as well.
Nice! Cheers mate.

I saw a longer clip on Youtube earlier tonight. You're right about it being an "early development" game. I remember playing the earlier AFL Live games on the PC, I had both 1998 and 2004 from memory. They were a bit clunky, but I'm looking forward to the new instalment. If only to be able to dominate and give Buddy and Rough the entire 50m area... hehe. I don't mind the clunkiness to be honest, as I'm not a big gamer.

Did they let you play as Hawthorn? And were you able to assess how closely the players are modelled on their real-life versions in terms of skills, agility, etc?

Yeah, we played a few games, and Hawthorn was one team that got a run.
;)
It's funny, Cyril was instantly recognisable for the way in wehich he played and was able to move. Franklin kicked a couple from memory and took a bit of a hanger.

We were very new to it all though, and there was a fair bit of button bashing.

Haha... cool. I remember the 1998 game and Darren Kappler running down the wing faster than the speed of light then kicking goals from 75m out. Was one of the few highlights in that game from a Hawks perspective. The other memory I have is of it being near on impossible to take a mark with the Nick Holland player. Funny that. ;)
