I've had my ps3 for 8 months now and never had a problem with it. Mid-game today the thing freezes and I had to shut it down. After turning it on again, the laser no longer seems to recognise that a disc is in there. I've tried turning the ps3 on/off, trying different games/DVDs etc over a couple of hours but the thing seems ____ed and no longer recognises anything:(.
Anyone had any similar problem/any advice?

looks like you're going to need to call up sony.

Looks like the laser disc reader has broken, call up Sony Support and they will take care of it.

This is the number BTW:
1300 365 911(Open between 10AM and 8PM).

Called today and took it back to Harvey Norman where I bought it, who will pass it on to sony for repair.

Shame I just got mgs4 yesterday...
