I really hope we get McCarthy. He would play round one and would be exactly what we need, adding to our midfield and forward line depth. A friend of mine from Collingwood said he could be an outstanding player, the only thing he lacks is confidence. This opportunity will do him the world of good. Fingers crossed.

To tell you the truth I would rather one of the promising young players who miss out in the draft ala Nelson or Frost etc. McCarthy would be serviceable for us but we need more than that at this stage. IMO we need to take a risk on a boom or bust.

Exactly like Bachar Houli, people were writing him off early, and the regular game time helped his confidenced and showed us what a player he can be.

We need to keep in mind we're recruiting him for the sole purpose of improving depth and upgrading on our bottom players.

I'm sure the knives will be out if he has an average start to the season but we really shouldn't be expecting him to come in and be another Cotchin or Martin, so long as he is an upgrde on players like Edwards or Jackson and he helps improve the quality of our bottom 5-10 I'll be very happy as it will come at very little cost.

Exactly. I think I remember Dimma saying recently that a big focus this off season has been improving our bottom 6.
Odds are not good for a boom/bust shot taken on a young player in this years RD to pay off, given the lack of depth in the selections.
I like the look of McCarthy and think he would be on the tail end of our top 15-20 once he got some confidence up, and would pressure players like Jackson/Edwards/White to step up their game. Can only be a good thing.
Really hoping Port f**k off

Couldnt agree more. I saw an earlier post saying we should take a shot on someone who was highly rated like Nelson. At the end of the day he may have been highly rated on here but at the end of the day he was overlooked by 18 recruiting teams in a WEAK draft so clearly the professionals think he isn't up to it for one reason or another.

Taking him in the PSD would effectively be like using a pick 80~ ish in a weak draft, the chances of a hit are slim. I'd much rather McCarthy who was drafted in 07 at around pick 30 by a great recruiting team who believe he has potential and was simply unlucky due to a tough midfield to break into and cap pressure.

He'll definitely add to our depth, maybe even better if he gets a good run at it (Y)

Yep, happy to take Snoop Dog's assessment of McCarthy - good player out if luck with injury. He also notes his suspect disposal, but hopefully he gets a good run out of the medical room

Of course I will go with what the brains trust feel is good for our list, but i have to say, locking in a player in the PSD, doesn't sit well with me.
Dont like the way we come out and suggest we are comitted to player x. We should say nothing. Of course i see the other angle and that they are talking it up as a three card trick to force Port into nabbing him, so someone else falls to us...interesting. ;)

:)Pretty sure Cogga we've done our due diligence on this and taking into account needs, price and whose available, McCarthy fits the bill.
We have a pretty early pick in the rookie draft if I'm not mistaken, so we should be able to land a solid youngster there.

yeah ok but we have also done the due diligence for Port too, by comitting to him, i.e. we want him because he is of the standard required, well we think so anyway and if you had a footy dept that rivaled our previous one, then it makes their job easier when they have a pick before us....I would feel a little more confident if Macca came out and said, i wont play in any other colour apart from the yellow and black. As the Bash did when we picked him up. ;)

Im happy to give McCarthy another shot if that wat the recruiting team deem best. They have been very good the last 2-3 years.

I would love the following scenario on PSD/Rookie Draft Day

PSD: McCarthy

Rookie #1: Mihocek (Tas)
Rookie #2: Maric (Melb)
Rookie #3: Wheeler (Coburg)
Rookie #4: Tipungwuti (Gipssland)
Rookie #5: Dell-Olio (Sth Freo)
Rookie #6: ????
Rookie #7: Heslin

The remaining rookie pick? I think another small/medium forwards would be call of the day IMHO. Maybe the best small medium forward left in the state leagues.

If we get a rookie ruck i dont see how we would develop him? Coburg 2's? Waste of a rookie pick with 5 existing rucks IMHO

Would like the tigers to snare this kid, just looks like your classic CHB that puts up a wall across the HB line..Speed an issue, but speed can be fixed nowadays...footy smarts and those hands that just take mark after mark you cant teach or fix..;)

And that's my biggest concern with him, his disposal. I don't understand how we will only draft kids who can kick but we are happy to take guys like Grigg & McCarthy.

the difference was stevens still went to state he wanted to.

Port would not only be asking him to play at a club he didn't really want to, but also dragging him interstate against his will

Nick Stevens and Jade Rawlings are the only two its happened to from memory.

I think the days of stuff like that happening though are over. A club would definitely not do it if it requried them not moving to the state of their choice - and why on earth would you risk recruiting a player to a club he has stated he doesn't want to go to - if, at best, they are only a fringe player? It might be worth the risk if they are a star, or a potential star - but taking that sort of risk on a fringe player would be stupidity at its best.

Wouldn't really care if the guy got "stolen" from us eitherway. looks like another b-grade fringe player to me that rarely adds value to his new club
