Clubs shy away from draft crop

As few as 20 untried players could be given AFL opportunities at next week's NAB AFL Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts, as clubs shy away from this year's draft crop.

The trend will be more prevalent in the pre-season draft, where there are likely to be only seven selections.

Clubs shy away from draft crop

I wonder if it could turn out like this

GWS - Dean Brogan
WB - Brett Goodes
PA - Sam Colquhoun
Ess - Brett Prismall
Freo - Nick Rodda
Adel - Nick Joyce
Syd - Kurt Tippett

If that happens, will anyone thake the plunge & take Dayle Garlett in the Rookie Draft?

There must be more to Garletts story than anyone's willing to talk about....he has shown up to train with the Bombers ?....on another thread someone mentioned something about more details of his alleged misdemeanors coming to light over the next couple of days...that was a few days ago, still waiting?...you must wonder how talented the last player on every list is that clubs feel they would rather waste their money there than have Garlett at the club....Maybe he does have issue's that we can't help with but as an 18 year old that is maybe a top 10 talent surely you can make the case that it was a justifiable risk even if you need to move him on if he doesn't make the most of the opportunity....if he's there with Powers last pick I would vote him in.

At a guess...

GWS - Dean Brogan
WB - Brent Prismall
PA - Sam Colquhoun
Ess - Dale Garlett
Freo - Jesse Crichton
Adel - Nick Joyce
Syd - Kurt Tippett

GWS - Pass
Freo - Pass

Bombers set to take Ariel 'little mermaid' steinberg somewhere I think

In the rookie, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the other clubs jumped first though.

I think the club would like someone else to. Really is an interesting player as is just tall enough to play as marking forward, but has very good leap and speed. He had increased value because of missing a few years of footy living in Canada. I think Essendon got caught out there by "upside"!!

In fact bombers wasted both picks in their 30s with him and Long. I was praying for Christensen and Liam Patrick with those selections!!

Anyhow I think Essendon has built the list very nicely in regards to the key players for any team, ball winning mids and talls. However, there is definitely not enough players who can compete around the stoppage AND break away from it AND use the ball well. Zaharakis would be the only one now. Garlett might address that in the future.

The other big hole is genuine goal sneaks. Yes Davey found some form last year but in reality he is just a lower level midfielder who has blistering speed over the first 20m. I hope that Steinburg gets an opportunity somewhere else and Essendon comes back from the PSD and rookie drafts with Garlet and Tipa ... (spell check!!).

Essendon has to take Steinburg because they gave him a contract and it seems a number of clubs are moving players like him to the rookie list so that they can give a kid a chance and not have Steinburg's contract counted under the cap. He's obviously seen as depth, at best, and would only get a game if there was a string of injuries and unless he has a development trajectory at a ridiculous level over the next season wont be on the list after it.

Note:

Both Jesse Crichton and Jordan Bourke are almost certainties to get to Fremantle and Brisbane respectively but may do so through the rookie draft instead of PSD. Fremantle will use both picks 8 and 14 on players most likely Jesse Crichton and a senior WAFL player. Kyle Reimers met with Carlton before saying no to them to play for Peel in the WAFL because of a "Lack of love for the game", I have a feeling he may come around though. Port will definitely take Colquhoun and is almost a certainty to take Jaryd Cachia (Formerly Carlton) in the rookie draft. Adelaide and Sydney have committed to Joyce and Tippett. Brogan will stay at GWS but with what pick is the question? Most likely 12 so that they can grab former Essendon big man Jason Laycock with pick 1.

Who knows who Brisbane will take at 4. But the recent delisting of Bartlett the past week to free up a spot for the PSD has me convinced they are going to snap somebody up. Perhaps K.Tippett after all?

Yeah as a Brisbane fan myself, I'm slightly excited about the PSD for the first time in a while because Brisbane will pretty much shape it. Jordan Bourke has been training with the squad and looks the most likely, talented 193 cm Forward with midfield capabilities, coincedentally Brisbane is probably the only team who can afford Tippett who hasn't committed to anyone, they could really break Sydney's hearts. Bourke is almost a certainty but I would also look at Rodda and Pongracic if I was Kerr.

If a team passes in the PSD does that give them an extra pick in the rookie draft and can you use that extra spot on the main list to elevated a rookie during the 2013 season?

It basically gives them an extra spot in their primary list which can be as low as 38 and as high as 40. It doesn't give them an additional pick in the rookie draft and now your only allowed 4 spots in your rookie list instead of the previous 6. Having a number as low as 38 or 39 will allow you to elevate 1 or 2 players during the regular season under my understanding.

Fremantle is one the very few clubs that will actually get some fresh faces in, teams like Geelong and St. Kilda are full already on both rookie and senior lists and won't take part in either draft. Fremantle will get Crichton back and look at a senior WAFL player, with Nick Rodda a tall W.A back also getting a look. They also have Callum Sinclair, Cam Symonds, Matthew Taberner training with the squad as well as Freo boy Alex Hewson all hoping to fill Freo's remaining two rookie spots.

This isn't right.
If you have less than 40 on your senior list, you can have an extra rookie or 2 (ie 39+5, 38+6).

You can then have nominated rookies to fill the extra spots.
eg Carlton will have 38 on the senior list, with Curnow and Bell playing as nominated rookies.
