Not sure who was responsible for the psych test the club used for drafting but it obviously has major flaws.

Any test that results in us drafting the less talented Conca over the more talented Heppell because of such an outstanding result in this test has serious issues and should be shelved immediately.

This is not meant to be a knock on Conca.

But FFS, we had Heppell training at the club at the start of the year, anyone who has ever met the kid or heard him speak for 2 minutes can see he is the most level headed, grounded, mature, natural leader you'd want to meet. He has done volunteer work in the NT with disadvantaged kids since the first year he was drafted. Any test that determines this guy is now behind others not as talented is a waste of time and needs to be shelved immediately.

Heppell is a drug cheat. You can't read too much into his form. If he played for us he wouldn't be half the player he is.

Cause we suck at development

points for creativity, haven't heard anyone bag the club for the psych test yet :thumbsu:
Had to be done though. I mean, when recruiting blokes, why does a question like 'Are you going out with a supermodel?' carry a greater weighting than 'Can you football?'

I have no issues with the club wanting to evaluate draft prospects and their 'psych levels'. We definitely have a culture issue at the club and need both strong leaders as well as young players with the right attitude to try and break the cycle of mediocrity the club has been through for 30 odd years.

No point in us drafting the best talent if they don't have the right attitude to go with it. Not saying Heppell is a bad egg or anything like that but the bummers probably have a better record of developing their talent than we have (hopefully now with our VFL side and more resources/money/development coaches going towards development, that will soon change in the coming years).

Prestia is the bigger miss than Heppell.

Having said that Conca isnt a bad pick. He is miles ahead of the likes of JON, Tambling, Polo, Meyer who we took in the first round.

Agree also and if i remember right, The bombers talked up Heppells hamstring or even done something close to shifty in regards to it. Was the reason he was passed over and not just by us. Conca just has not had a decent run without injury. Once he gets a full pre season it will silence a lot of people.

I'm not saying Conca is a bad pick as such, but I have heard Heppell speak a few times, he is seen as a leader already at Essendon, he does charity work and any test that puts Conca well ahead of Heppell from a psych POV is obviously flawed IMO.

hope he is still doing it after his drug suspension.

Tell myself what? That PED's don't enchance performance? That Dyson didn't take them?

Jeezus I hate threads like this one.
The guy has one outburst and for some reason you think that a psych test should have picked that up. Seriously... Do you have any understanding of this or are you just using lazy pop-psychology as your reference point?
Both are talented players. Heppell is more advanced with his development, and he may well be a better player in the long term. But the rest is just BS that justifies your belief that out recruiting sucks.

Conca's decision making worries me. Seems to not pay enough respect to the opposition at times. Not just the back hander but the kick across defense causing WHE mark and goal was not smart.

Seems to take too long before straightening up to dispose the ball to. Like to see him hurry up in his disposal at times, maybe he thinks to much if his ego is kicking into overdrive and I would like to see him develop his kicking across his body more if opposition pressure demands it! Maybe Cotch can help him get ball on to foot kicker at times like what he does when lowering his torso.

Think Conca should develop with more one on one coaching because at times I watch him play and think, why would you do that that way, if I think he had more experience or know how! I think he needs to improve his playing style with ball in hand to get the most out of himself , playing a bit more percentage footy even a bit more like Miles using more quick, compact disposal techniques if circumstances warrant it. At times he seems to hold on to the ball way too long and over think things when he needs to have a subconscious idea how he needs to go about it with ball in hand that one can get with experience and guidance over time! Maybe what he has done in the past is adequate in lower, slower levels but the intensity at AFL level may demand a rethink on how he approaches certain situations with ball in hand to be most effective!
