Melbourne City FC -Australia's GOAT Sokkah Team
well played lollingwood, comfortably slaughtered the homophobes
Lets be honest, if the situation was reversed, every other club supporters would do the same (booing a player who made a complaint about homophobia)
Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney fans have infamously and shamefully homophobically slurred from Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo, the first openly gay men's professional soccer player in our Country.
It's going to take many more years/decades before homophobia is stamped out completely (almost as much as racism is) at pro men's sport level.
Hollywood and the TV media are largely responsible as well for making movies like The Hangover Trilogy and Wolf Creek etc infamous for homophobic slurs and jokes.
The younger generation gets it (say 25 and younger) but as I say, older generations (like mine) have been raised and taught via movies (in my case far more than religion, in all the years of going to Mosque and hearing lectures from an Imam, i only had one sermon about homosexuality, and even then he was pretty gentle about it, definitely didn't say or preach homosexuals should be killed or physically punished for their beliefs)
High school and especially sports as a kid/teen and young man was full of homophobic slurs as well as movies and TV shows i have enjoyed over the years.
Yes I used to be homophobic and transphobic, I am sorry and yes ashamed of previous behaviour, but I have evolved and half way matured.
I cannot change the past but can do something about my current and future attitude (granted I think i was misguided about Rankine and his punishment too severe, last night's booing of Quaynor only justified it)
Sadly I think its going to be a very long and painful effort to try re-educate other homophobes (and i think Religon is a major cop out excuse)
I think this also boils down to the perception of Masculinity and what its like to be a 'man'
and why i think the campaign to try stamp out extreme form of toxic Masculinity (such as that campaigner Andrew Tate) is the right now.
It's never too late too change/be a better and more considerate and open minded and tolerant human being. (And yes I am aware I can still be an utter pill/tosser at times)
