They showed that on ABC News 24 last night.

Having lived on the Darling Downs and Brisbane and worked in Toowoomba (and played footy against teams from Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley (Gatton), Warwick and Dalby) I was shocked at the footage I have been seeing on ABC News 24.

Last night they showed a female reporter standing next to a plate glass shop front in the main shopping precinct in Toowoomba and the water mark on the window was at about her shoulder height.

Inland tsunami is an apt description.

Mentioned in today's Australian that a lot of that water will end up going your way, albeit weeks later and with significantly less intensity. Amazing that a town at the top of the Great Dividing Range, some 700m above sea level, can still be susceptible to such extreme flooding.

... was reading that they beautified the CBD area in Toowoomba around the two creeks that flooded resulting in less clear flood plain and under roads small pipes were used ... against some recommendations - that may have contributed to the situation - I guess a review after will search out some changes/causes?

The last few days have been absolutely devastating up here. In fact the last 3 weeks have. Thankfully my property is unscathed but I have friends and family who have literally lost everything. One example is my aunty lives at Yeronga right next to the Brisbane river and since 74' hasnt been able to qualify for flood insurance. In 74' they lost everything, there house is two storey and the water partially covered the roof. Yesterday they could nothing but watch on as there house was inundated again this time only half a metre lower. This is only one of many heartbreaking stories I have.

I myself live in the CBD of Ipswich, which is on the Bremer river and is connected to the Brisbane river and only about 35km away from Wivenhoe dam, the Bremer was tipped to peak at 22 metres on Wednesday, but thankfully the rain eased at about 8pm Tuesday night. Apparently 70% of the CBD was affected by the flood, I count my lucky stars I was in the remainder. My heart goes out to all who have been affected by this disaster but there is no beating mother nature. I will post some photo's from round my way.

Good shots there offkilter.

Hope the situation gets better for you and yours. Good luck with the clean up too, everyone down here is feeling pretty helpless watching the footage.

cheers

On The Australian Queensland floods website, there's video of a guy returning to his Graceville home - walking around near shoulder deep in water.

Harrowing to imagine what that would have been like as a moving torrent.
