im a keen follower of water storage levels due to the fact it is in short supply and will get worse probably leading to a war over water one day.

have been monitoring the brisbane situation closely and i remember a couple of years ago brisbane was in dire trouble and trucking water in and now have excess water.... how times change.

Re: How good is this rain?!

I'm over it, starting to get cabin fever.

Malenys rain :- today, so far (around 8.15am) 45mm, rain for the month 450mm & humidity around 98%.

Re: How good is this rain?!

Good thing you're on top of a mountain then Crimso!

Edit: it's a good thing we've got Wivenhoe with this rain. Some of thesetotals are not unlike those of 74

I have looked to a couple of sources for the meaning of Iconic and attempted to interpret what the Sub Editor was thinking in relation to the use of this word.

1. a picture, image, or other representation.
They could be onto something. They did post a picture/image after all but what did it represent to make it Iconic? I believe that it represents a subliminal thought on the part of a music loving sub editor with the thinking that one could well persuade the reader that the Royal On The Park is a very important representation of all that is important to the history of music in Brisbane as among others both Elton John and Duran Duran are reported to have stayed there. Plus the Oasis singer king hit one of his fans in the park across the road.

2. Eastern Church . a representation of some sacred personage, as Christ or a saint or angel, painted usually on a wood surface and venerated itself as sacred.
Could The Royal On The Park bear an uncanny resemblance to an eastern church in a style that has passed me by in my travels? Are there sacred representations within the various rooms of this building? Perhaps it is the venerated Gideons Bibles that should be furnished within each room?

3. Computers . a picture or symbol that appears on a monitor and is used to represent a command, as a file drawer to represent filing.
There is a hidden meaning to this that is not beyond comprehension.
Royal on the Park Hotel is HAL. The letter H is the first letter of the last name. The A appears twice hence it is number 2 in HAL with the L being last in the first word with the original first and last letters changing place.

4. Semiotics . a sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it.
I found out from Wiki that the term Semiotics was spelled semeiotics in Greek. Greek = σημειωτικός = semeiotikos = an interpreter of signs. There are pictures of the 74 floods in the foyer so by interpreting the current La Niña event along with the 74 flood pictures there is increasing the chance of cloud, rain and tropical cyclones in Queensland and these are likely to be present early next year. This could bring Tropical cyclones along with torrential rain. They are not common to reach as far south as Brisbane, but Tropical Cyclone Wanda did in January 1974 and did impact Brisbane. On average 1.2 cyclones pass within 500 kilometres of Brisbane each year

After deep thought I have come to the conclusion that 4 is the correct interpretation of the use of the word Iconic in the headline. The Courier Mail has been a noted mouth piece for the Real Estate industry so would never state outright that to purchase a million dollar property on the Corso is foolish even with a catastrophic flood soon to come. The La Niña effect is happening and they know the consequences. With that in mind I have decided that the use of nonsensical meaningless words in headlines prepares the populace subconsciously and in this case it is for a coming disaster. The Courier Mail is trying to prepare us for huge floods and we should all take heed. So when this thread asks How good is this rain?! I say not good at all. Batten down the hatches.

Time to acknowledge your almost Nostra-Dam-us… “The Courier Mail is trying to prepare us for huge floods and we should all take heed.”… post John.

Eerie coincidence: 1: Johns post was #265
And if you were to look closely to the Bureau of Meteorologys' mapping of the rainfall totals to 9am…

rainfalltotals10dec2010.jpg

I reckon if Crimso was to check his rain gauge it would read…. Yep you guessed it 265mm.

Although John has concluded that #4 is the correct interpretation … I will direct the readers to Johns suggested third [red herring?] answer which also... holds water.

Computers… #3 -- Those old enough will recall that in the Stanley Kubrick/Arthur C Clarkes “2001 a Space Odyssey” that the computes name was HAL… So… I hear you ask…
Is it not a little odd that in a thread titled “How good is this rain?” That the person that was the voice of HAL was… Doug Rain!!!:eek:

And don’t even start me on Magnolia… or that the bloke tackling Garry Wilson on the Scanlens card in Roster Watch is none other than Andrew Demetriou... or that... ;)

QLD Floods

I know we have members here from right around QLD, one I know of who had part of the Toowoomba torrent rip through their garage today. The family that sit next to me at the Gabba are from up that way, and I couldn't help but think about them today. Was great to see Browny, Acorn & Retzy on the phones for the telethon, and the AFL make a substantial contribution to the kitty.

Hope all of you are well, and that any of you effected by the current madness cop as little as possible, and can get back on your feet asap.

Re: QLD Floods

Totally agree Haggis, although based in Melb – I’ve connections through work in Rocky and best mates folks are located close to Gympie. Times are not good but there is a lot of good being reflected by the Aussie spirited support. :thumbsu:

Re: How good is this rain?!

I'm guessing people have seen this, but worth watching again. Scary stuff

As a frame of reference, here's the place where it happened. Not a hugely deep creek, but the pure definition of flash flood.

Re: How good is this rain?!

Could turn out to be one of the worst events in Quld history before this is all over.Watching that in Toowoomba was like watching a horror movie and there are dozens in crisis down the range. When is it all going to end.

Re: How good is this rain?!

I used to live in Toowoomba and seeing what happened there today made me tear up so bad. Its such a cruel and horrible thing to happen to that beautiful little town :(

God you are a bitch Mother Nature you really are!

Re: How good is this rain?!

I support a thread title change!

I have never experienced flood but by all reports the speed of the flood was horrendous, seeing that car go down the street in toowoomba makes you realise how powerful it is.

We are right here at Holland Park how is everyone else in Brisbane going?

Re: How good is this rain?!

Amazing and horrifying scenes playing out on the news services this morning. The most horrific scene has to be the family in and on the 4WD, no word on their fate yet is there?

Re: How good is this rain?!

On a serious note, is the Gabba affected by all this rain or is there good enough drainage to cop with torrential rain if it hits the city?

The Gabba drains very well.

Whether it could cope with 1974 type water levels is another matter entirely.

Re: How good is this rain?!

Ipswich's turn now. Then Brisbane.

Seriously guys, stock up on supplies if you can, no one knows how bad this could get. You may not affected through flood water, but services like water, food could feasibly be impacted. Don't want to sound alamist, but better to be safe than sorry.

Re: How good is this rain?!

God some of the updateas from Queensland Police are really upsetting.

All in the last 45 minutes...

All residents in low lying areas of Strathpine and Caboolture should evacuate immediately. Cars should be moved from low lying areas. The flood levels are expected to be greater than the 1974 floods. Do not stay in your homes please leave immediately. #qldfloods #thebigwet

An Emergency Alert has been issued for flash flooding in Laidley. Laidley is likely to experience rapidly rising water levels and property inundation, posing an immediate danger to residents.

All members of the community who live or are currently near the Brisbane River at West End are advised to move to higher ground.
