Not sure where to post this, so apologies if this is in the wrong part of the forum.

It's my 18th birthday coming up next month, and my parents have been asking me what I want, and I really don't know what I want, or if I need anything at all. So I jokingly suggested an iPhone, knowing Mum would say no to it, but she considered it. Only thing is, I know nothing about them. Could anyone give me so help? Best thing about them and worst thing? How much are they? Can you get them on a prepaid deal at all? Any affordable deals for someone my age?

Thanks.

You can get them outright, so you can just buy prepaid credit.

Capabilities? Check the Apple website and the hundreds of thousands of forum threads dedicated to them. As for 'good' and 'worst' things, well, that depends on you. I guess you're not needing it for anything specific, so I wouldn't say there are drawbacks. I dunno, it'll be better than your current phone. It's a weird question.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace at the moment, and without wi-fi connection at home I find it quite useless. That would change with an iPhone.

Thanks for the replies.

Best deal = $59 cap on Optus. Reception isn't the best but it's the best value.

But I wouldn't be getting an iPhone now considering the new version will be out in a few months.

It depends a lot on how much you spend and how connected you are in a social media sense. I know that sounds weird. If you really use your phone a lot and go through a lot of credit, I suggest going on a cap. In fact I don't recommend going outright at all because that makes no sense. Especially if you get one which has no good internet plan, don't even bother with the iPhone.

Yes the new iPhone is coming out but a 4S will still get updates and run the software etc as the new ones, so if you like the look of them it doesnt make sense to spend an extra $10 per month or something for a year or two for a newer model when the current 4S has no real issues. (barring battery drainage - but that's a software issue. GRR)

The best thing about the iPhone is easily its internet browsing capabilities and wide range of apps. I'm not a very big user of facebook or twitter but I do have a lot of emails I need to check and it connects really well with safari and gmail. Also for Uni it helps with apps like dropbox etc if you already have existing apple products (iPad, Mac) etc. I also prefer internet browsing on iPhone over any smartphone I've had and typing IMO is very easy.

However if you're the type of person who hardly uses your phone there is no use forking out the money for an iPhone.
I don't play any games because I CBF but they drain battery like a bitch (Not that Android etc are any better.) Battery drain is my biggest problem but its a bit of a lottery thing, I had a very very good battery pre iOS 5.1.1 and now it's average.

Honestly though, I was on the edge as well. I was on Nokia before and refused to switch and I got an Iphone as part of my present. 4S 16G $59 Cap Vodafone - $800 usage including free calls to 3 and vodafone and free domestic and international sms/mms. Before I got the iPhone I said i didnt want it because I have an ipod touch so it was a waste of money. Wooow I was so wrong. I actually cannot live without it. It's insane.

Thanks guys. Got surprised last week with an iPhone 4s, very pleased about it after my first week of use! Battery is a pain but it is easy enough to manage. Only thing is I have a 1GB internet plan monthly, and have no idea how much i'm using (Facebook, AFL websites, here etc.)

Anyone looking for a good deal for any phone try amaysim unlimited. You get unlimited calls, texts and 4 GB of data for $40 a month and no fixed period of time contract
