I'm a little confused about something that maybe someone could shed some light on.
You know how when they announce the teams for the upcoming round either on the news or the Footy Show, and they sometimes say "such and such team has named blah blah blah on an extended bench". What exactly does extended bench mean? I thought you had to name a certain number of players? Or does that not matter until gameday?
Cause if you really want to screw with the other teams head, I'd name the entire list on an "extended bench". That'd give em something to work over! :D
Anyway, I have no clue, can someone clear me up on this? :o

Team's that play on Sunday (or Monday) always name a 25 man squad. 18 on the field, 7 on the bench (extended bench). This team is always announced on the Thursday night. On Friday's the team is then reduced to the 22 that will be most likely to play, the 3 that miss out are the emergencies. A team can bring in a player that isn't in the emergencies however it is rarely done as it comes with a rather hefty fine from the AFL.

You can't name your entire team on the extended bench because you need to fill out each position on the field. Alot of this is for the punter's and TAB's who can help set the odd's as the teams are listed
