Does our success, or otherwise, depend upon us strengthening our defence, and more specifically, finding/developing a FB????

Disagree entirely. Look at Dunstall and Lockett when they played for very average teams. Its harder to kick goals than defend them. Its as simple as that.

A coach (cant recall who) said a few years ago something along the lines of that having a great defence is all well and good but if you cant score more than 70 points you arent going to win many games.

.....Yes, to the strengthening our defence aspect of your question. Strong, committed and bite-the-bullet desperation, "by the defence in the dying moments", have saved the last 2 premierships for the victors. But despite me not denying the obvious benefits of a proven injection (ala Danny Jacobs already),...............if our back 6 remain stable, and they mature into a cohesive unit, who know by 2nd nature, each others' game inside out, .....HELLO..............this is so tried and true, therein lies the secret grasshopper..............can you polish my car, and/or paint my paling fence ?
 
As long as you've got a forward line who can kick more goals than the defence lets in, you're going to win the game. If we can kick 20 goals every match, we will win more than we lose. Williams, Roughead, Franklin and Dixon were potent in the last four rounds, even if we did play other strugglers. If we can average 3-4 goals out of each those, it will provide a platform for the likes of Crawford, Bateman, Hodge, Clarke, Ladson etc to get us up to 20.

After getting our forward line in reasonable shape, its time to focus on the backline. I'd hope we can at least recruit one KP back in the draft or PSD this draft period.

The forward line is in much better than reasonable shape. Potential guns and match winners in most positions, especially in 2-3 years.

I believe, and have mentioned numerous times before, that we need a Backman to take opposition guns and that has a defenders mindset. I have noticed how important that is because Gilham and Jacobs (our only real natural defensive KPP options) look far more composed and well positioned compared to others.

This is the glaring hole in our team for now and into the future. For this reason I agree we need to recruit another KPP backman. Ideally Hansen will be available at 6 as he sounds perfect. This is extremely unlikely so -

- Do we take Thorp (is he a natural KP backman capable of developing into a player to take the opposition gun out)
- Take N Brown at 6 or hope he slides to 24.
- Take best available at 6 and best KP backman at 24 or 33.

Who are the other KP backman Hawthorn may look at that could develop into a #1 tall backman?

Fair comment - but that coach obviously wasn't coaching Sydney? :)
