Not trolling here guys. More guilt tripping!

Given I am old and grizzled enough to remember the SOS campaign, and to remember my Dad and uncles and various friends tipping money into the Tiges when you guys were going bad, what are the views here on buying a North membership for a year or two until we get our act sorted, or slinging us some bucks in some form?

Just wondering.

Idea has merit SweetLeftFoot!

Have done it in the past and will do again for 2008.

If you created such a campaign I'd donate a bit.

But dont think I'd become a Kangas member.

Hmmm, SOS was a direct result of poor fiscal management from a poor board... Not lack of supporters etc... Thats where North is stuffed, i don't think i would by a membership, due to the fact that it is an unsastainable source of revenue.

North need more than a $50000 to $100000 from new members they need Millions from different revenue streams... Memberships play a small role in the financial position of an afl club.

I'm already going to give Norf a bit of cash. Not hundreds of dollars, mind you, I'm not exactly made of money, but I'll give them what I can.

A few of my mates and my brother are Norf supporters and they're one of those teams I like to see win (except when they play the Tiges, of course), so I figure it's all for a good cause.

Unfortunately, as has been mentioned, it's not a long-term solution to a long-term problem. Any SOS-style campaign would bail out the club for a while, but the club would need to find a way to make ends meet into the future.

To be honest I was pissed off with how the Kangaroos treated Canberra. Came here after failing to get into the Sydney market and after a slow start they did some good work to start building up support . You can't expect to win over a market over-night. It is going to take years to build up support. But then as soon as they started to make some progress they ran out, as there was a slightly better offer somewhere else. But not before trying to run an auction between Canberra and the Gold Coast for their services. Also pisses me off how the AFL and its media arm the Herald Sun continuously bagged crowd numbers at Manuka but have been happy with the lower numbers at Carrarra. Unless the Kangaroos develop a long term strategy, they are just going to piss off more and more people as they bed-hop from one venue to the next.

If I was convinced it would help in the long term, yes, I would.

As it is though, I don't believe that, so if I were to 'donate' any money to a football club, it'd be the tigers, ( probably by buying more 'crap'...Like the raffle tickets at home games. ).

As others have mentioned, there is a difference between a one off fix ( eg. SOS and Carltons recent issues ) and an ongoing problem.

If the tin was rattled I would donate......
My sister in law is a kangas fan and I would hate to see them go under..

For the sake of their supporters and the traditions of the game, much like Fitzroy and South I'd not like to see the Roos leave Melbourne, but as a 'brand' (as it's called these days) they're going nowhere. Let's face it, if you have a side like they did in the 90's but can't translate that onfield greatness into a significant additional supporter base which gives you some financial security, there's a very high chance you never will.

The cash they're short annually is not a huge amount in todays money, but despite having plenty of years and options to sort that out, they never have.

Would I donate money to a football club I don't barrack for when I could donate that money to an organisation that helps people or saves lives?

No. Personally I couldn't justify doing so.

Having said that, I do hope for the club's sake they find a way to stay in Melbourne.

I'd tip in if that had some sort of campain gotta keep the melbourne clubs in melbourne

No way I would buy a membership but I would give some cash to help Nth out. Only concern I have is like others here - short term donations are not going to cut it - how are they going to keep the money rolling in next year and the year after to keep them solvent? Good luck to them - sad to see another Melb side outposted.

I've seriously considered taking on North as my second team. They are a great club in that they can generate such team passion, it translates into on-field performance against the odds. The Tigers need the same.

Trouble is, you get less value as a North member than at any other AFL club, due to the shares system.

But what the hell, as Victorian clubs we should be helping each other out in the face of big brother trying to dictate terms. I hope that people power can turn things around.

My passion for the Tiges would preclude me from buying a membership for North, however, I would give a donation ... but like a number of otherposters here, there would need to be some building blocks being put into place.

The financial problems at North are systemic. The AFL provides 70% of their revenues. This is unsustainable if they are to survive without the AFL assistance. Donations and memberships just is not enough.

I'd consider getting a membership. In addition to helping out, it would also allow me to get to go see some other games for free if I was bored (and not on the other side of the country).

Depending on the way they structure the memberships, maybe access to finals tickets that I previously couldn't get.

I completely agree about Canberra. An appalling effort.

My brother-in-law, keen Roos fan. His 10 year old son, who is autistic, is passionate about the Roos. Loves going to the games, buys all the gear.

Not members.

Symptomatic of the club, unfortunately. I'd buy my nephew a membership to keep him involved in football, but God knows how he'd be if the Roos moved to QLD. Like others have said, I would support them to keep them in Melbourne, but what guarantees do we have that in 1 or 2 years they won't finally fold and go "North"?

Some good responses, cheer guys.

I know what you mean about sustainability, which is whyin the OP I said it would be for a year or two until we sort our act out.

There are no guarantees but now is the time for people like your brother-in-law to make a decision.

Send me his email address!

I agree. I will hassle him about it - and I will buy a membership for my nephew for Christmas (which would absolutely make his day!) Great, 1 Christmas present problem fixed!

Personally, if you can afford it I don't see the shame or whatever in buying a membership. It's not like you are gonna just go change alleigances. But memberships aren't as cheap as they used to be and i'm not gonna deride anyone who couldn't afford it.

But if it came down to paying $x for a North membership or donating $x, well i'd buy the membership and take the extras that go along with it.

Sorry SLF, moving to the Gold Coast in a month or so and looking forward to lots of games at Carrara. Thinking of buying a membership if it gets me any benefits at the games, but will wait for the official announcement in the next 30 days confirming it is 100% on. I'm afraid I can't see it NOT happening.

So cheering for the other team I'm afraid. Mind you I would happier if it was the Sharks who the AFL was forced to go with and made a new team, mostly as others have said on the history of the North Melbourne club. Also a new team would mean everyone would have to give up some players. Maybe Judd could be the one the tankers are forced to give up LOL!

But Gold Coast Kangaroos. C'mon...has a great ring to it;) Blonde Cheerleaders will be back! Tiger Airlines will take care of you mate!
