Someone (Frodo?) was asking how Lynch was going in the WAFL, so I thought I'd file my eyewitness report of yesterday's West Perth v Peel Thunder game, which was the quintessential game of two halves.
In the first half, West Perth were terrible and with Lynch playing up forward, he struggled to get in the game. Peel thundered up the middle and ran and passed the ball to each other and only poor finishing by all except Scott Simister at FF kept the half time lead to a mere 5 goals.
Lynch was shifted into the back line to hold up the charge. Peel kicked the first goal of the second half, but WP (to our collective joy) kicked 11 of the next 12 or thereabouts to win the game.
Lynch completely shut Simister (top scorer in the WAFL at the time and an experienced player) out of the game. He out-bodied and out-ran him and completely dominated him. It was a remarkable effort for an 18 year old.
He seems to have bulked up and is a very big boy indeed. He has a very long kick, usually pretty accurate, though yesterday up forward, from few chances, not as good as usual. He can kick 65 out of defence with little apparent effort, even on a wet day. He is also surprisingly mobile for such a big bloke.
What impressed me also was in the three quarter time huddle. He is very vocal, remarkably so for a young bloke surrounded by mostly older players, many of whom have played in WAFL Premiership sides. Positive, focussed and aggressive. On a couple of occasions I was afraid that he was going to smack someone (it was a slightly spiteful game with a remarkable number of 50 metre penalties), so I hope he can control/channel his aggression.
Maybe he could be groomed to take over from Jako in time.
Apparently Seaby played in the reserves, but I didn't get there in time to see him. With Phil Smith out for the season with a knee and Brett Cousins injuring an ankle, Seaby may get called up to the firsts at some point, though I can't see him displacing big Ron Skender in the ruck, so I'm not sure where they'd play him. Could play him off the bench and rest big Ron up forward on occasion I suppose.
