Widely recognised as one of the most popular and influential bands in the world for a long time - definitely not underappreciated.

Great band, though they went down hill after Auto for the People.

Document remains one of the all time great albums IMO.

Love their work!

Fav songs of theirs of mine (didn't think there would be so many!): The One I Love, Drive, It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I feel fine), Orange Crush, E Bow The Letter, What's The Frequency Kenneth, Man On The Moon, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, Stand, Shiny Happy People, Bang And Blame, Crush With Eyeliner, All The Way To Reno and the final two, which I'm a bit sick of now, probably as I've heard them so many times; Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts.

I see they broke up last year. They had a great run. :thumbsu:

So many great songs. They were a very accomplished band.

I wasn't sure how they were viewed in general but it seems R.E.M have a lot of admiration.
What's their best album? Automatic For The People? Out Of Time?

My favorite album is Green.

Pop Song 89, World Leader Pretend, Orange Crush, Get Up, Stand....

so much quality

You cant go past Automatic For The People either.

I love a lot of their really early stuff too....So. Central Rain (youtube that one....a classic debut performance from a shy, hirsute Stipe on Letterman, before the song was even named....) , Radio Free Europe, Driver 8, Dont Go Back To Rockville, Cant Get There From Here, Gardening At Night.

Sadly missed already.

I don't think I ever bought any of their individual albums (except for their "Best Of"):

so I'm not one to answer that. I just got to know their songs from the radio, and the music video shows on Saturday/Sunday mornings, when I was growing up and then MTV/Music Max, etc, on pay-TV.

They were the first band I ever became obsessed with. Own all of their albums and was lucky enough to have awesome seats (straight in front about 5 rows back) for the Melbourne and Sydney concerts the last time they were out here. So you could say I appreciate them!

FWIW I think New Adventures in Hi-Fi is their most underrated album. Classic IMO.

The live version of Country Feedback on the Road Movie video/dvd is just about the best thing ever. I remember SBS or ABC broadcasting it in the mid 90s and I must have worn the tape out I watched it that many times.

Definately 'Document' for mine. With 'Green' a close second

They were the greatest.

Wasn't too surprised when they called it a day, or even too upset. It was time to stop. While the post-Bill Berry era wasn't considered amazing, I still love much of it, and listen to Up and Accelerate a fair bit.
None of it compares to 90's REM though. Automatic for the People, Monster and New Adventures in Hi Fi is my favorite period of music from anyone.
I also consider Murmur to be one of the best debut albums of all time.

My 10 favorite songs

1 Be Mine
2 Country Feedback
3 Talk about the Passion
4 Turn You Inside Out
5 I Took Your Name
6 Driver 8
7 Perfect Circle
8 Half a World Away
9 Try Not to Breathe
10 Nightswimming

Discovered them with Green, even though I'd heard a few tracks before that. But that album marked one of those fork-in-the-road moments in my musical tastes. It's still my favourite.

Good post:thumbsu:
Agree with all above, you can add Hairshirt, The Wrong Child and Finest Worksong to this list.
Saw them live at Festival Hall in Melb in 88' and they were great.
Very sadly missed:(

Near Wild Heaven
Nightswimming
Sweetness Follows (#1)
Green Grow The Rushes
Driver 8
The Great Beyond
Star Me Kitten

New Adventures in Hi-Fi would probably be my favourite REM album too, quite underrated. I quite like Reveal too which isn't rated that highly by a lot of people. Was a big fan of Monster when it came out but it sounds a bit dated now with that fuzzy grunge style of guitar dominating most of the songs.

Both Out of Time and Automatic for the People are good albums and rated by most people as their best albums but I can't say I really warmed to them all that much. The singles from those albums getting so much airplay on radio probably didn't help either.
