What a fantastic man.
Was privileged to get to sit down with him once for 40-odd minutes and shoot the breeze.
Of course, attention turned to Richmond, as it would with me firing off the questions, and he spoke quite fondly of some of the friendships he'd made (Knights and Campbell come to mind) and while it didn't quite work out, he'd learned a lot from the experience. Ingrained in me the fact that you are never too old to learn new things.
He was charming, respectful and very principled - three of the best traits you could ever ask to have.
I happened to run into him a year or two later and low and behold he recognised me and struck up a conversation and asked how things had been. Amazingly switched on and considerate.
As a coach, one of the great innovators.

No love lost between Walls and Sheedy

Informative, entertaining, engrossing...good footy talk...
Reckon Wallsy gave it to sheedy...
Sheedy started to play the eccentric, funny coach towards the end...
But sheeds really disliked being made accountable with his comments...
And I reckon Wallys had a point about sheeds not knowing what its like coaching different sides other than just the one...
Goodonya wallsy! Vale...

What Walls said about Sheedy's coaching experience being "narrow" was nothing but self serving on Walls's part.

But an accurate and truthful assessment by Wallsy...sheeds was at one club for over twenty years and had the full backing of his club and sponsors and players... so am not sure about where you're coming from with...self-serving on Wall's part.

It's not Sheedy's fault he couldn't get sacked like Walls.

Irrelevant...

Robert Walls was right.

As good as Kevin Sheedy was for Essendon, Essendon was just as good (if not more so) for Kevin Sheedy.

Without wanting to discredit Sheedy in anyway because he was a fantastic coach of the times; I often wonder what would've happened to Sheedy as a coach had his first gig been at a club like St Kilda, Fitzroy, or dare I say it our basket case mob at the time.

Ess hadnt seen much success at all prior to him arriving , last flag in 65 wasnt it and very few finals appearances in the 70s he was outstanding and I was so envious that he rebuilt that club largely with Richmond people, judkins the recruiter, merv keane Bryan wood , heck even pinched our runner

Me too.

Particularly as we were shooting ourselves in the foot at every opportunity.

We got plenty back with Hardwick taking us to triple premierships, especially when Essendon could have had him before us.

Could you imagine the Carlton melts had Robert Walls taken us to premiership glory!! :)

Yea I personally had a wish that dimma would always emulate sheeds 23 y stint at tigerland but wasnt to be

Sheedy stayed too long at Essendon. 20+ years as a senior coach at one club...FAR too long. Brilliant coach but he probably should have won one or two more Premierships, in my opinion.

Apologies if I did.

To me what Robert Walls said made perfect sense.

There were a number of reasons why Sheedy couldn't be sacked and Walls was. But Sheedy being at a strong and resourceful club like Essendon certainly helped him more than the basket cases that Walls had to preside over.
It's cool ...I was using and replying to what's-a-names quote...I totally agreed with Wallsy!

Agree with what you are saying. He became part of the furniture.

It's a shame we didn't extend Northey's contract by the extra year he was seeking at the end of 1995 as was reported. Because I'm convinced by the end of 1998 we either would have won a flag under Northey (not beyond the realms of possibility given we were further advanced than Adelaide and they went b2b in '97 and '98); or Sheedy would have been offered a decent contract commencing 1999 and he would have made a huge difference to our fortunes at the time.

Swings and roundabouts.

In the 1980s and 1990s Richmond had that bizarre habit of sacking coaches if immediate success didn't happen.

Perhaps Northey staying on may have delivered a flag? Even Walls was cut too early. As for Sheedy...his heart turned into Black and Red. In some way its like he forgot about Richmond.

I would of loved to have seen Malthouse as coach and I'd preferred him over Sheedy. Both great coaches of course but Mick for me.

I watched since 1967 Sheeds is a great for his football here, Northey was good ... Mal Brown average.

Sheedy ( delivered as coach, 4 flags. Stayed too long? irrelevant. The Northey era Richmond had Mal Brown around. GR lite

Northey asks for an extension.. knocked back. Tragic as that 90s team was good.
part of the 37 year drought.

RFC finally started giving coaches 5 years in the 2000s.

I think Gale was anti GR, 2016 support Dimma not sack him
