We wouldn't have a team if we sent everyone who suffers a brain fade back to Coburg to work it out. It seemed like Wallace gave players like King, Newman, Raines, Connors & Bowden a licence to run the ball out of the backline to try and break lines, the problem being some of them ran too far before getting rid of the ball meaning most times our forwards were out of position or they would end up running into on coming traffic and putting themselves under pressure. That is why I suggest that Raines should be given simple instructions get the ball run 15 and deliver it long and direct into the forward line. First option footy will catch most teams out before they can get numbers back and allow players like Richo, Brown, Pettifer, Deledio & Riewoldt the luxury of competing 1-1 instead of battling away 2/3-1.

me thinks he needs to understand that the faster he runs, the faster he gets to the spot where the man who wants to stop him is. He needs to work out that there are times to run fast and there are times to run a little slower, because there aint anyone chasing, which gives you time to work out an option.![]()
Hopefully will become a midfielder in time.
Had a down season but that could really just be 2nd year blues. Next year is very important for him.

I know its not a popular view point but i think he is rated far too highly by the tiger faithful and if his last name wasn't Raines he would of played plenty more games at Coburg this season. His decision making skills could be the worst at the club.
I liked his season last year but he is a shadow of his former self now that opposition know how to quell him. I'm not sure he's either cluey or skillful enough to play in the guts and King has definitely surpassed him in the role down back this season. He is playing the wrong code in my opinion, could have been a gun league player.
well with a fresh pack of duds leaving the club this year, raines may have just made the wipping boy club. his up and under specials make me want to throw up into my own hands.
yeah the spew would probably have a chunky texture and smell of sunshine dustobviously a true football expert, any more insights for us?
Terry just needs to get in Rainsey's ear and say...
"Ok Rainsey, we've let you do that 'take on the opponent shit' since you were here. We've encouraged it until you got your feet and the feel for AFL"
You've scooted around the best and you've been crunched by the best. That's it. That's the best they've got to throw at you. Now it's time Son, to gear down, use your eyes and ears more and look for options one line ahead of you for the betterment of that play, instead of breaking through two lines and confusing the hell out of everyone"
"You now have a feel for the game, time to fine tune your disposal, to the right teammate at the right time"
Then again....If I was Terry he'd probably tell me to **** off!!
Cheers
Raines' biggest problem long term is his kicking technique. He just doesn't, and probably can't kick through the ball properly. When he kicks long he kicks the ball like Waybe Campbell did - floating the ball higher to compensate for the fact it would travel 35-40m instead of 45m if he didn't. Unfortunately, he doesn't come close to having the other attributes Campbell had which made him a viable AFL player, and he probably never will.
The kid has heart, courage, a great attitude, and he seems a quality person, but where does a player with average pace, flawed long kicking technique, average ball winning ability and questionable decision making skills fit into a top side?
If he was 193cm+ he could get away with these things, but he's not. If it was 20+yrs ago he could have been a permanent small defender a good side could have carried if he just gave the 100% he does now.
In the football of today, there's only a place for 184cm players if they have at least one and preferably more of four attributes: very good pace; dynamite ball winning ability and tenacity in the contest; very good disposal (accurate and penetrating kicking top of the list) and decision making skills; or are outstanding goal sneaks. Occasionally a bloke with good pace, reasonable skills, superb endurance, great tackling and who is hard as nails can become a tagger. The rest are just marking time if they play at genuinely good clubs. They get overtaken by players who have more of the right attributes to offer.
Bearing in mind King, Jackson and a lot more players to come will tick more of the boxes above for even the lowliest position - tagging - where does Raines fit into the above template?
