It's his aggressive rebounding that we've missed. Take that out and Lids and no wonder the team has been slow. Chaplin can't rebound. His problem at Port was that they wanted him to be a rebounding big defender and he's not up to it. We recruited Chaplin to deal with the big gorillas that Rance has trouble stopping. Astbury is abetter kick than Chaplin but he's too slow to rebound the way Rance can.

He gets the ball moving quickly and takes his chances, he is courageous and helps other defenders and is strong at ground level as well as in the air. A great defensive general on the last line of defence, love the Tross.

Him and Astbury have the chance this year to form a nice little tandem KPD partnership, Astbury's work one-on-one with the gorilla forwards has been sensational this year in a very weak defensive back six.
Remember his collision with Selwood in his first year. Absolutely fearless. Just hope he stats off the bike and no more spa bath routines and no more rave parties with gay stalkers!

It's funny, a lot of players on our list were once thought of as duds, bad recruiting etc, who would have thought a bit of confidence and proper development would see them turn into dependable AFL players.

100% agree. So much of it is above the shoulders.

Something changed for Rance in 2013, and you don't suddenly find that sort of courage or athletic ability. He might not be voted into the Leadership Group, but his on-field actions shows the other 21 blokes what it means to want to win.

I was sitting in the opposite pocket, and I still heard it loud and clear. Sickening sound. They both went for that footy in a way few players do.

A credit to Rance for slotting back into the side as if he never missed a game. Watching Rance and Astbury in tandem gives solves the big problem we had last year with power forwards. Astbury has gone past Chaplin. Once he develops an offensive game, he will be the complete modern day gun defender and be comparable to Sauce Merrett. Potential swing man as well ? Grimes to come in for Chaplin and the three talls are settled.

For goodness sake, he was taken with an early second round pick! We should expect a player taken with that sort of pick to be okay. Not stunned.
Plenty of high draft picks don't end up making it. I think the OP is celebrating the fact that, in Rance we have a strong, courageous defender who provides plenty of run. I don't think anybody is 'stunned' by his development - more delighted.

Another player that suffers from "tiger-itis"
If he was at a more successful club he would be recognised as one of the best defenders in the comp

Definitely. He's not a superstar (yet), but he'd be kicking the door down for AA based on courage alone and his positive can-do attitude is the heart and soul of any successful footy club. Some good years ahead for him and the RFC.
