I just recently got into their music. A waste of talent IMO. Really sad what drugs do. How much do you give them out of 10.

really lit up the music world for a little while in the early 90s and its fair to say they probably haven't lost any of their popularity since. although i have to think we all probably wouldn't think so highly of them if their career wasn't so short and kurt hadn't died. what i mean is, if they went on for a few more years and started releasing lesser material, they mightn't be as memorable.

i think that has happened to oasis. Alot of people think they are irrelavant now. And grundge has gone downhill now, i dont even know any grundge bands now.

Right up there with Radiohead & Coldplay list for me, You know bands that come with this massive reputation for being awesome but are really average and put out the odd decent bit of music. The fans are generally obsessive about them and wont hear anything bad said about them becasue they see them as some sort of genius' but in all reality that moniker is undeserved.

Having said that I own most of NIrvana's catalogue , Okay Computer but alas I cant bring myself to buying the U2 cover band that is Coldplay. I never said I hated them but they are just terribly over rated. Add Powderfinger to the list also.

Very good band, but a tad overrated. Kurt was a great singer, guitarist and song writer, but the band never did anything 'amazing' with their music. I still rate them highly though.

Good band, but highly overrated. To this day, I still don't see what the fuss is with Smells Like Teen Spirit. Come As You Are, Heart Shaped Box, Lithium are all better than Smells Like Teen Spirit, which is probably the most overrated song of all time.

I'd even probably list them as 4th, out of the big 4 of Grunge.

1. Pearl Jam
2. Soundgarden
3. Alice In Chains
4. Nirvana

That's a pretty ridiculous statement. I don't care who you are - going from a band nobody knows about to selling 26 million copies of your second album worldwide - and knocking off Jacko from the top of the album charts in the process - that's an amazing achievement.

Overrated? Perhaps, but I would say not. People who overrate them are the hardcore fans. They get their due. Their best, sadly, was to come. When you consider what Grohl has done post Nirvana, and take into account that Cobain was probably one of the better songwriters of the last couple of decades, the band could have been out of this world. That's the truly tragic thing.

Provide examples as to why. Simply because "you don't see what the fuss is about" isn't good enough to make such a statement. It's very easy just to state something without basis.

Nirvana = Awesome (probably moreso for what they did then there music)

Nevermind is a super album.

What Nirvana did that was the best though is that they revived rock back into populatrity which had previously been dominated by synth pop bands and shit hair metal bands.

We need another Nirvana...

I got caught up in all the hype in the early 90s and listened to them a lot. Can't stand Nevermind now though - played it so much that I just got sick of it. I sold my copy. In Utero is ok though. In the last few years I have only just discovered Pearl Jam, and now I rate them higher than Nirvana.

Alot of younger people won't know what the music scene was like in the early 90's, but for rock fans it was pretty dire. The charts were full of rubbish (what's changed!!) and you just didn't hear any rock music at all on the main stations. I started listening to JJJ in year 10 (1991) and started hearing some new music, but even then, there was no bands around that captured anybodys imagination...until...

"here we are now, entertain us..."

There was nothing else like it on the radio. Even the crappy commercial stations started playing it. It brought a new generation into rock. Sure Pearl Jam had come out with their first, but there was no one like Nirvana.
and
Nirvana were never the best band and Kurt, Krist and Dave weren't the best musicians, but they had something and they represented a new wave of music that is now influencing bands today.

EDIT: Watch Live, Tonight, Soldout. It visualises the buzz they created and exactly how popular they became.

Music for the bogan masses of the 90's.

Not the worst band around but extremely overted in a musical sense.

They had a big impact culturally at the time.

Still as dead musical artists enigmas go Cobain isn't worthy of his adulation.

If Cobain didn't top himself they probably would have hit their peak in about 95-97 so it could be argued their best was yet to come. But like the Beatles, at least their reputation wasn't tainted and their last work left a good impression.

We all know about their impact on the rock scene, but rating their material: Bleach was crap (apart from a couple of songs), but Nevermind, In Utero and MTV Unplugged were all brilliant. The only criticism is that sometimes you could get sick of Kurt's depressive whining if you weren't in the mood.

Good band. Loved In Utero - that album rocks but thought Nevermind was overrated. In all though they were certainly one of the leading bands that made grunge fashionable.

I reckon they are very good, but are probably over rated. The one big problem I have with them (and most grunge bands) is that alot of their music sounds the same. Listening to a whole album can become a bit monotonous for me, but listening to one off songs I really enjoy them.

great post!
nirvana got me through some tough times in the early 90's, girls, work and shit like that. really summed up the angst of teenagers at the time. don't think anyone of that era would deny that nirvana was fairly special to a lot of people back then.
still get a great run on the i-pod.

Agreed with all you're post but this part Kurt and Krist weren't all that great musicians but Dave is one of the most talented natural musicians their has been for a long time

Remember buying the "Sliver" single in early '91,and being impressed, and then getting the "Bleach" album and "Love Buzz" single (all vinyl of course) Picked up the Nevermind (vinyl) album on release and thought it to be pretty good. About 6 months later they are huge. As a few have stated they changed the industry, although next big things etc. have no effect on my personal listening.

Sort of regret not seeing them, remember asking a few mates, but none were interested.

Very rarely listen to them now, but i guess if i had to pick one album it would be In Utero.

I'd rate Mudhoney as the best band from that so called "Seattle grunge scene."

Overall rating for Nirvana 8.5/10.

I agree about Dave now and think he's a legend, but back in Nirvana days, he was just the drummer in a grunge band.

Only a select few bands can say they changed the world. These guys are one of them. Awesome band, Cobain one of the great songwriters, IMO. 9.5/10.

he we go.. bout time nirvana shows up here. hehe.
without a doubt - pearl Jam and Nirvana are right up their. Nirvana introduced grunge to the world which changed alot of lives.
lots of attention was actually focused onto Kurt himself and his unique personality.. he had a certain charm and individuality that set him apart from others.. i am obsesed with him and loved his material.. although i can see how all of his songs don't make sense, it shows what kind of person he was and i give him credit for being someone different. absolutely love him and hoping to follow his footsteps
