Its not often you have 3 debutants so I thought its worth a thread to discuss how you thought they went, here is my take on their game.

Darcy Daniher - Started promisingly won a few possessions and just let himself down with his delivery to Lloyd on the lead. Went onto Motlop, lost contact with him twice and had two goals kicked on him. After that i didnt really see him until the last quarter. Looks a good size with decent pace although his kicking didnyt look great.

David Myers - Interesting looking player, a little bit "arms and legs" and looks to be still growing into his body. Didnt get a lot of it, made a couple of nice tackles and a few good handballs.

Jarrod Atkinson - Did some nice things, took a great contested mark and showed a bit of dash off halfback. Had a few brainfades including one pearler in the final term, looks to have a ready made body and should fit into the game plan well.

Thoughts??

Daniher: Looks to have good size and pace. Also seems to have a good footy brain (despite running too far with the ball). Could play either end of the ground.

Myers: Showed good skills today and very good vision. Is a pretty tall guy with good speed over the first few meters.

Atkinson: Nice and hard at the ball and took that great mark. Great size and pace although his skills were a bit suspect.

Daniher needs to be played as a forward, but Neagle looks better for that position. Hardly saw him in the game and when he was he didn't look settled.

Myers will only get better when the others around him aren't shit.

Atkinson was exposed badly today and I wasn't impressed.

Myers' effort was as good as I could have hoped for before the bounce. His effort in the left back pocket in the second quarter where he stripped a port player on the ground, got up, and ran away to hit a player in the other pocket/flank had me out of my seat. Was far from outstanding, but for me, def did enough to get me excited. Looks poised and quite good below his knees too. Tackled fairly well. Looked as though he ran out of petrol a few times on longer chases. Looks a very smart player and well balanced. Extremely upright in his body in all his movements. Very happy with him first up

Would have loved to see him take that mark when he first came on.

Neagle :thumbsu:

Although it wasn't his first game ii thought i'd give him a mention...

Was very good tonight and looks like he will be a deadset gun. Won something like 11 contested posesions from 12 posssies. Very impressive indeed.

Thought Myers also showed plenty of class.

Myers was fairly clean and composed and made the right decision with the ball better than most out there. I'm still suspect as to his best position but I think he needs to play as a midfielder.

Daniher looked ok in bursts but the got caught out by the speed of the game. Looks a very likely type though but once again I'm sure what position will best suit.

Atkinson I thought was great apart from his one or two lapses. He has the body and pace to play at AFL level. He should be played as much as possible to see if he can come good.

most contested possesions of anyone on the ground, even though he played in a forward line which didn't get much supply

This and his steal / gather on the wing and delivery 45m to someone on a lead (I think it was the second time we hit a lead all day), showed what the kid is capable of. He tackles extremely well aswell...

Myers looked pretty good. He is deceptively quick, was handy in his debut.

Daniher was pretty quiet. He might get his chance to play as a lead up forward if McPhee gets rubbed out.

Atkinson, didn't do much for me.

Myers impressed me in bits, but wasn't around enough.

Atkinson was pretty non-existant, but did a few nice things on the city wing right in front of me.

Daniher was too quiet, but will get used to the pace of the game, and come on.

And for the other kids:

Hislop was alright, but needs more time.

Neagle was brilliant. I gave him a vote, and it could have been more. He did look a bit chunky when I saw him up close a couple of times.

Jetta quiet, but he'll work his way back into it.

Houli pretty good, as he has been all year

Myers - Battled hard and looks to be a classy pickup. Very unusual kicking style, but was effective.

Daniher - Started well up forward, not going to judge him on his performance down back as he was matched up on a player who is completly wrong for him.

Atkinson - Quick and a much needed mature body. Not sure what the future will hold for him. My guess is he could be a handy backup.

myers was very good IMO. his efficiency rate must have been close to the highest for essendon. what impressed me was his poise - for a 1st gamer he didn't panic and seemed to have time to make the right decision and hit the target every time. blokes like dyson and monfries who have been around 3 years + continually turn it over yet this bloke myers looks a natural. the way he moves and his size are similar to judd - he should play midfield as is good in close and breaking tackles etc. i think he has a massive future and should stay in the side permanently - blokes like dyson have had their chance now and proved they're not up to it so lets stick with myers.

Of the 3, Daniher probably had the least impact despite having had the best lead-in form. figure that out. He'll be fine though, just needs more time.

Atkinson surprised me after copping a bit of stick from some this week, was serviceable although joined the majority of his team-mates with a terrific brain fade at one stage.

Myers, again didn't get a lot of it (who really did) but did one or two nice things in traffic and unlike quite a few didn't panic with the ball. could be one of those guys who always seems like they have plenty of time. Is massively unmatch-fit though, was really struggling to get to some contests and was blowing wore than Neagle when he came for a rest in the second half

Daniher , thought he was ok early when he was forward. Got burnt in defense and Motlop was probably not the best match up for him. Just an average game but i have to say he has shown more this year than i thought he would.

Myers , did a few good things but got lost in the pace of the game at various stages. His possesions where generally good and when he was minding Pearce or Rodan at half back he did not let them get a lot of the footy. He did fall away intensity wise a few times. Needs to learn he cant drop below 100% for even a few seconds at this level. Tackling was good. Thought he could have done a bit more but was reasonable.

Atkinson. Pace is good.Skills are still suspect and his decison making can be dodgy. Did not think he had much of an impact and made a couple of costly error's. The first time i saw him play with the Bendigo seconds last year i said he had something that could see him play senior AFL footy but he would have to improve his disposal if it was going to go further than a few games. That is still the case.
