Highest football ratings for the year:

"The final, played between Brazil and Germany, had a peak national audience of 3,474,000 while the AFL Grand Final had 3,425,000 tuning in, with 2,438,000 enjoying the NRL Grand Final and the ARU Bledisloe Test attracting 1,744,000."

Its amazing that the AFL GF can still match it and in most cases exceed the other sports while televised during the day on a saturday, when all the other desperados have to resort to prime time Sunday/Saturday night times.
The other codes would easily get an extra 1,000,000 casual viewers just becuase they are in prime time, meaning if they all went head to head on satruday afternoon the AFL would complete desimate the competition.

But I wonder how long it will be before the AFL goes to a night GF?

Next year, you can bet on it!

Reasoning will be due to the work at the MCG and on site construction regulations being the trigger for the AFL to experiment without it looking like an AFL decision

Better not be, it would eliminate the last tradition and "One night in September" doesn't have the same ring!

Happy to take that bet.
I think the AFL would like to but don't have the testicles at this stage.

Even if they did have the testicles they probably wouldn't by the end of the week it was announced, the football public would go absolutely ape-sh*t.

But the word coming out of Channel 10 is that it won't be a decision for the AFL to make as it will be a 'public safety issue' in terms of the MCG's reconstruction (or that will be the excuse used)

How could it possibly be safer to stage it at night than during the day?

When the half built stand collapses, the people who aren't crushed by it might not see what happened, so there'll be less panic.

Couldn't care less if it's a night Grand Final. No big deal.

About 40% of AFL games are at night anyway, and that includes night Qualifying Finals, night Semi-Final, and night Preliminary Finals. It is not a factor anymore. It was no big deal that there was a night Preliminary Final this year. No one cared.

If they had the Grand Fianl at night next year, it would just be "the Grand Final" to me. The fact it would be at night would be irrelevant. There is so much night Football, that we shouldn't concern ourselves with the prospect of a night Grand Final. It is no big deal. Night-day, who cares? So the game starts 270 minutes later than normal. Big whoop.

Bring it on, if they want. Night-day, it's all the same these days.

Sorry, but I don't agree. I would still attend a day game in preference to a night game. Football is traditionally played during the day and though other games may be moved to night the biggest game of the year should still be during the day. The atmosphere of a day game is always much superior too. The only reason football ever started being played at night was for TV reasons, nothing else. Humans are not night creatures and never will perform to their utmost at night.

players

i think the extra mental stain would also be telling.

they would be thinking about it all day, i guess you could have the parade the same day but that would still tire the players.

it's gotta be at day

Why dont they play it at twilight .......surely that would make everyone happy.

And while there at it play Coll v Ess at dawn on ANZAC day.

Why? I'd love a night grand final.

At night, I have a far greater inclination to drink. :)

But I can't work out what the big deal is. 3pm,. 5pm, 7pm, who gives a rats arze?

Grayham,
I think you have the incorrect figures for the NRL G/F.....NZ for a start.....they are part of the NRL comp. too!
Maybe someone can confirm.

Also, you want to bet that the afl doesn;t go onto a Night final within 5 years?;)

Yes I think they are, didn't they have a team in the GF?

Joke.

Nah, they cant go for a night Grand Final...

1. I have a BBQ lunch, and we eat the cold snags for dinner, if its a BBQ dinner, what the hell will I do with the leftovers??? The dogs can only eat so much offal!

2. I start drinking at 2pm, and thats final (pun intended)! How the hell am I supposed to see the ball at 8 or 9 at night???

3. Ok, we win the premiership....I've been drinking from 2, had cold snags, the game ends at 9.....who's gunna pay for the stomach pump???

4. Ok, we lose, I've been drinking since 2, eating cold snags, and the game ends at 9.....who's gunna pay for the stomach pump, the tissues and the compensation when I tell everyone that "I love ya mate, but those maggots robbed us"

I used to watch the NRL(ARL, whatever) Final every year, but not since its been a night game....its just not the same!

You get your mates around, and they can watch the game, have a beer and a snack, and get the kids home in time for bed...now thats a finals afternoon!

All those games were broadcast around the world, so if you are going to include other countries then who knows. I think the soccer would win hansomely in that case.

I read somewhere that NZ had a peak of about 400,000 for NRL GF, so that would be an average around 250,000 at a guess. Still some way short.
Also the AFL GF was televised into NZ, I dont know the figures, but that would probably got 50,000 - 100,000 viewers. But who cares?

Channel 9, 7,10 and australian advertsiers only care about Oz figures.

That's not as silly as it sounds or you probably intended it. After the dawn service would be huge and culturaly significant. I think it would be a great symbolic gesture. The diggers didn't complain about getting out of bed early to get shot (well they probably did but they did it anyway). Half time two up would be awsome also.

Ahh truer words have never been spoken. The tradition of the Grand Final BBQ must survive or else all hell will break loose. It is one of the cornerstones of our great nation.

I'll still take the bet. AFL fans are far more part of teh comp. than are NRL fans. The AFL won't do it despite the lure of TV dollars. It is purely a TV dollar driven push. TV dollars don't just influence the NRL they own it.

You seem to be forgetting your esteemed president in fact requested less night games next season because they are not friendly to families and clearly disliked in comparison to day games. Every survey I've ever seen has fans choosing day over night.

What would be the impact of a night grand final on tv ratings around the world?
Surely having the GF shown in Europe and US at a decent hour, their time, would push up the ratings and show off our great sport a bit more to the world............?
