Reading a story on AFL/COM/AU and it seems to be signaling that we have missed out on rawlings?
whats your thoughtsGeelong coach Mark Thompson has tacitly acknowledged that the Cats still face special hurdles in endeavouring to recruit Melbourne-based senior players to the club.

The Cats, who made all the early running for out-of-contract Hawthorn utility Jade Rawlings, dipped out when Rawlings chose Arden Street as his preferred destination to join his younger brother Brady at the Kangaroos.

Rawlings was seen by Geelong as the last piece in the puzzle – the key forward that would help the Cats to a genuine tilt at the 2004 finals.

Only Rawlings would know whether factors such as lifestyle and travel had a bearing on his final decision.

What is known is that Thompson did everything possible to try to attract Rawlings to Geelong.

“If Jade had made the decision to come, he would have really enjoyed Geelong,” Thompson said.

“But just taking that hurdle is something we haven’t been able to get anybody to do at this stage.

“Sure we could have offered more money – another hundred, two-hundred thousand dollars. But then everything goes out of balance.

“We did our best to get Jade here. It didn’t work. We move on to the next one.”

Thompson said the club’s record in terms of its handling and retention of its younger players was exemplary.

“One thing about Geelong and (bringing players from) Melbourne is that when we recruit players from a young age, they’re very, very happy to stay here,” he said.

“That’s demonstrated by the number of good young players we’ve signed up. None of them want to leave.”

With Rawlings having dropped off the radar, Thompson said the search for a ready-made key forward would continue.

“The priority would be to put one there for the next year and the year after to help our young guys develop,” Thompson said.

“They’re not easy to get. Any club that’s got one, they don’t like to give them up too easy.”

“We need to be able to kick more goals. In the last two drafts we drafted forwards, and they’ll come on like the midfield has come on and the backline has come on, and they’ll come on pretty soon I think.”

SUCKS BALLS

Beat me to it, Falconer... was just about to post the same thing myself. :)

It's been said that the first step to finding a solution to a problem is admitting the problem exists in the first place, and in this case, it's a good thing that Mark Thompson has admitted that Geelong has a deficiency in this aspect of its recruiting efforts.

I know a lot of jokes have been made by opposing posters about the City of Greater Geelong, but I think Thompson makes a very good point about what the city has to offer, and emphasising that to the potential recruits.

Aside from that and bringing forward the point of the direction that the club is headed (accentuating the positive aspects, of course), make a little "thinking outside the square" mentality by the GFC hierarchy is required so that the next Jade Rawlings-types of recruits don't slip away again.

It's a very interesting article, hopefully Geelong will be able to attract players from Melbourne-based clubs in the future. We're doing a great job retaining our players once we recruit them down to the Cattery.
