Review Rd 10 Port vs Collingwood

There are currently 65 players with a higher goals per game average than Todd this season.

And 54 have kicked more goals than he has.

If goals are not your thing, and you want a broader measure of contribution to scoring he is ranked 155th for score involvements per game.

And if it is disposals per game he is ranked 402nd, which is actually fractionally lower than Dixon and Georgiades.

He is performing well in terms of contested marks per game (33rd) but comes in only 417th for tackles, and 155th for one percenters, so is not adding a great deal on the pressure side of the game.

Overall he is just a pretty average footballer at this point in his career no matter how you cut it.

Might that change as he ages and matures? Absolutely. Should he stay in the team? Definitely. But let’s not go over the top on what he contributing right now.

And there are 108 forwards that play every week. 126 if you count the 1 off the bench. As most people have been saying, he's not as bad as you think, and is slowly getting better.

Be interesting to know which of our forwards are below him on that list. I'd be guessing:
- Motlop
- Rozee
- Woodcock
- Ladhams (for the 4 games he played forward)

I guess it depends on one’s expectations. If average, accounting for position and stage of development is the benchmark then he is performing to expectations. If your bar is higher then less so.

And btw, in terms of score involvements per game he is currently equal 12th with Rozee and behind Motlop and Woodcock, though not by much.

Was actually thinking that but couldn't be at this stage of the season?
Sure, why not? Two ‘easier’ match ups heading into the bye? It’s about load management and I am sure the AFLPA has it contracted there is a week of non contact during the bye week

What about Frontal Wow?

Lol. I don’t think anyone is labouring under the delusion he’s sneaky Wayne Carey right now, it’s more a measured defence against the baffling silothink that would us believe he’s Jake Neade being gifted copious games at the expense of peak-Tredders.

This should give Dane Swan some fresh Twitter ammo...

I like the sentiments and hope it is true.

But on what evidence do you confidently say that we have another gear we can find in finals?

I think it is there based on how our game plan has changed. We aren't closing down space as quickly and we aren't protecting the ball from getting to our back half as much. This is due to Allir Allir. We try to attack from defense more. I think this style is more sustainable in the season proper but we have to play a much more all over the ground defense later in the year.

How can you say this yeara style is better in the season proper?

We were minor premiers last year!

Darren Cahill's good mate, fellow ESPN tennis analyst and occasional Prison Bar guernsey wearer, Brad Gilbert would have told Darren he was proud of the way we won the game.

I think Nathan Buckley has read the book and incorporated it into his game plan, but hasn't mastered it yet.

I expect another 3 or 4 maybe even 5 Brad Gilbert type wins over the next 2 months, as our depth is tested.

Player ratings notoriously favour ruckmen for some reason. Apparently Nic Naitanui and his 3 touches a week has been the best player in the game for years. I would look at his rating relative to Grundy.

The ratings punish you heavily if you * up and you get little points if you do the average thing as expected.

10 hitouts to advantage got Grundy 7.7 of his 23.3 pts. He got 0 pts for his 23 other hitouts. He also got 23 disposals.

Fyfe got 20.9pts and had 27 disposals, but had 5 clangers compared to Grundy's 3.

Key Messages
Equity Ratings measure the net effect of a player’s involvement in a game. A positive outcome can easily be cancelled out by a negative outcome five minutes later. Players who consistently produce positive contributions will be rewarded higher than players with a high volume of stats running at competition average or below. As an example, an 18 disposal game by Cyril Rioli can have more of an impact as a 42 disposal game by Dane Swan.

Actions close to goal have a high impact on the scoreboard so efficient ball use forward of centre, accurate kicking in front of goal and intercepting opposition disposals close to defensive goal are all rewarded highly. On the flip side, missing easy shots at goal, dropping marks at either end of the ground and turning the ball over deep in the defensive 50 all carry a heavy penalty. Lance Franklin may have 10 shots at goal every game but every behind he misses cuts into any points he has gained from kicking goals.

For example to get close to 7.7 pts Grudy gets for 10 HO to advantage, a forward who kicks all 13 goals all from 15m out will only get 13 x 0.6 = 7.8pts. If he only kicks 2 goals and they are both from 60m out he gets 2 x 3.6 = 7.2pts.

If a forward has 13 shots from goal all 13 from 15m out and he kicks 10.3 he gets 10 x 0.6 = 6.0pts for the goals but for missing those 3 shots, he also gets 3 x -3.90 = -11.7 for a net of -5.7pts

Does it say what the forward gets for taking 8 contested marks, and creating enough separation on the lead to take 5 more uncontested marks, all within 15m of goal to create those opportunities?

Haha not that specific. But a contested mark 30m from goal is worth 3 times a HO to advantage.

That's actually pretty useful. The forward would get 8*2.23 + 5*1.38 = 24.74, just for winning the ball within reach of goal. Then if they kicked 10.3 it would end up about 20 (assuming they get more points for kicking from further out, and are punished less for missing from further out).

The record score is 50.5 when Buddy kicked 13.4 in Tassie in 2012 v North, and Buddy being Buddy would have taken contested marks, uncontested marks, got ground balls, kicked them from 15m or less out, sprayed a few and bombed them from 55m out.

The best game ever recorded was also by Franklin, when he was at Hawthorn, for his 13-goal game against North Melbourne in 2012. He notched up 50.5 points that day.
