What it is is a story of almosts.

Walsh almost nails those passes. Gov almost takes those marks. Harry almost takes those marks, and almost keeps his feet. Martin almost pulls it off. Ed almost traps the arm in the tackle, allowing them to get the hands off.

What I don't get is how indecisive we were early. We get a clean ball, we almost go to the first option but then we see something else and in the same motion as kicking it we somehow decide not to kick the ball or to shank the kick. It's not something you see every day in footy.

They had everything their way early; the ball bounced out to them, accidental knock ons fell immediately to hand, they were bigger and stronger and they couldn't miss at goal or to each other. Yeah, we don't start well, but they started with the footy gods on their team. To get the game back on our terms took Gibbo and Pittonett, both of whom would go close to our BOG. Weitering was titanic behind the ball, and Plow was almost as good.

Eddie looked past it. Gov looks like the bloke who would dine out on kicking a cheap 4 goals in the seconds and gets promoted to the ones. Ed looked closer to the end than I'd have thought, and Murphy looked slow for the first time in my memory. Setterfield needs to actually look interested in earning his own ball, and he needs to actually want an AFL career if this is going to continue. SPS had a shocker of a first term, but got involved the longer the game went. Casboult didn't do nearly enough, but he wasn't alone.

Ultimately, someone needs to go to the players and tell them this: fu** off with excuses. Go have a whinge on your own time. Commiserate on your own time. Ultimately our sport is a hard game, and the margin doesn't matter.

0-2 is what matters. That is your measure of achievement.

The shortened terms don't help, either. We ran that out significantly better than they did, but they had the luxury of going into conservation mode after 5 minutes of that final term.

That is such a missed opportunity. Three quarters of dominance but that first quarter was completely unacceptable. We may well show up to Geelong and start well but we will lose regardless. If we showed up in the first quarter today we win easy. Either way it’s looking like 0-3 which means season over. Our best footy is actually good enough to beat half the teams in the comp but we can’t bring it consistently. Pulling my hair out.
