I don't think sat out is the term you should use. Are the Redbacks that confident that they are resting players? According to the team lists on the RDFL site, Morgan hasn't played for 3 weeks and Merrell even longer. Burlak, Wheatley and Sullivan are fair outs but they didn't appear to play as a TEAM. Lot of players played as individuals.

Round 18 and no spot in the top six is cemented. As the best home and away season for many years comes to an end, 3 teams are fighting for 2 spots in the finals, and while the top 2 looks to be set, Macedon are ready to pounce on either side (Riddell or Lancefield) if they happen to slip up in round 18.

Ladder:

1. Riddell 52pts 162.38%
2. Lancefield 52pts 156.97%
3. Macedon 48pts 161.84%
4. Romsey 48pts 120%
5. Diggers 40pts 106.76%
6. Sunbury 40pts 104.2%
7. Woodend 36pts 110.72%

Round 18: Sunbury v Romsey; Broadford v Lancefield; Kilmore v Riddell; Melton Centrals v Woodend; Macedon v Diggers; Rockbank v Wallan.

If results go to ladder positions the top 4 are set, however the Burras, Roos and Hawks will be on the same points, so you coud reasonably assume that Woodend will take 5th and the margins will have the biggest impact in the Diggers and Sunbury games, Diggers having the advantage going in to the round by 1.5%.

Macedon are still a chance of a top 2 position should either Riddell or Lancefield drop, but you would suggest that unlikely based on form, they are both playing opponents way down on form and confidence. Anything is possible however, and neither Kilmore nor Broadford should be underestimated.

I think it will be Diggers who miss out, they may have beaten Macedon last time, but the Cats are a much harder proposition at home and Diggers have struggled on the bigger grounds this year.

So my prediction for week 1 of the finals is Riddell v Lancefield, Macedon v Sunbury and Romsey v Woodend. What an exciting year it's been, and we are a week away from the most anticipated finals series in recent history. This week is there is a couple of crackers just to whet the appetites. In the words of big Kev......I'M EXCITED!!

Let's get back to the issue.

Both I and Omni can't believe Woodend got a final, yet again.

Facts have been raised, yet no one has discussed them.

Why did Woodend's fixture change so they had no home games in the last month of the regular season? Was it to help their chances of getting a final?

Also, to clear things up. The RDFL general manager (Scott McCartney), presents his recommendation to the RDFL board, chaired by Ollie Matthews, as to where he thinks the finals should be played.

However, it is entirely up to the RDFL Board, which has about eight members from memory, to decide on where the finals are played.

Perhaps its a coincidence, but its been two seasons since a Woodend diehard got on the RDFL board and about the same time where they've started getting a good deal regarding finals etc.

Why can't a club host two finals? We want to be playing at the best venues.

But that's another argument.

I'd rather give Rockbank a final ahead of Woodend, but to answer your question, I'd probably give the final to Diggers Rest, who potentially could have a great venue for footy finals but cut down all the trees to allow a howling gale come through.

But the simple solution is this.

1. Go back to a top-five (six sides making the finals isn't too many, but the top five system is the fairest finals system of them all).

2. Week 1 - Macedon and Riddell host finals, with Riddell getting the predicted higher drawing game.

3. Week 2 - Romsey and Lancefield host finals, with Romsey getting the 1 v 2 or 3 game.

4. Week 3 - Macedon host prelim final.

5. Week 4 - Lancefield host GF.

6. Find a way to share money around between clubs without facilities.

This system keeps footy on the best grounds in finals and if you noticed, it also gives Macedon and Lancefield two-week breaks between games to maximise their playing surfaces.

I would have no problem, rotating Romsey, Macedon and Lancefield over the major finals, although I think the Redbacks are a few facilities short of a GF just yet.

Also, it gives Woodend extra time to get their ground right for cricket. It's no good for winter footy, but Gilbert Gordon Oval is in the top three cricket ovals in the GDCA!

My understanding is only 7 clubs applied for finals with each of them receiving one. No-one from Kilmore answered my question regarding them applying for a final so fair chance they didn't apply. Doona should be able to fill us in on whether or not broadford applied for a final.

Sunbury have 2 grounds on one reserve that are in good condition, perhaps they could host a double header similar to Melton last year but a little more central.

I was at Boardman today (junior final) and with the rain they had today it was a mud bath!!

Coming from a league where finals were rotated amongst all member clubs Im of the belief our club exec was a tad gunshy about the whole tender process and the stipulations etc surrounding playing host to finals - so perhaps they thought it best to get around and see how it all works, talk to clubs etc and who knws maybe next season try and get one. We have some ongoing issues with our Shire (Mitchell) in regards to our facilities so we may not have been deemed adequate anyway????

Dont quote me 100% though as I have had limited contact with the club since my last game 3-4 weeks ago.

Disappointing season in some ways I admit, but with Matt Finch playing his last game of football and thought of upsetting the punters somewhat, our lads should be keen to finish on a high with 5 in a row and maybe some earnt respect . . . . but most importantly I know they were embarrased about the earlier game against the Tigers and will make a better fist of it come Saturday.

They did. And if they play like a TEAM (which they did not on the weekend) I reckon they will win it. BUT, if players want to play like individuals like they did on Saturday then they will struggle against the top 3 like earlier in the year. The Lancefield and Riddell games show that when they play as a team then they are the side to beat.
They need to get more out of Richmond who is more worried about coping one behind the ears than he is about getting the footy. Kearney appears to be struggling and unless it is in tight, is getting shown up by defenders who run.

and to Mr nicholls where is the cover from the wind at Lancefield? perhaps in summer, most of the trees are deciduous therefore the wind goes straight through them in winter when they have no leaves.

There is no-way you could ever play a finals game at Rockbank the rooms arnt up to scratch and the ground is not up to it.. That is not taking a punt at the club its just what they have got,and that goes for most of the grounds in the RDFL.

Just on your first point, it doesn't matter how much grass you have on top, it's what is underneath that matters. The type of soil at Romsey and Lancefield drains exceptionally well.

Secondly, the trees at Lancefield still allow for some cover and the ground isn't in a wind belt like Rockbank, Diggers Rest, Melton, Kilmore, Wallan etc.

It can get very windy at Romsey, too, but nowhere near as bad as some of the other venues.

A question...

Do others have the same opinion that this season has seen a shift in the mentality of free kicks being paid for head high contact??

Yesterday was a prime example again, both sides had players that were contacted when they had thier head over the football yet the call was play on.. I have tended to stay away from umpiring decisions or the way games are umpired on here, but I have a certain degree of concern now that a serious injury is going to occur within our league if the hard line that has been taken in the RDFL, that is, contact, any contact, with the head is an automatic free kick, no ifs, no buts, no maybe's. If there is head high contact, a free kick most definitely SHOULD be paid in my opinion, it is the one rule change that I think the AFL has got right in recent times and it should most definitely be cascaded down through our competition. My view, I would rather see a free kick paid for head high contact that not, even if there is doubt on the contact, I would like to see umpires take the view that the person with his head over the football always has the benefit of the doubt, rather than the onus of "you ducked your head" which seems to be the line we take, the only time a person ducked is when they are standing upright with the ball and bend to put thier head down... Bring back the high tackle and protection for the player making the play....

Again, this is not a reflection on just yesterday's game, this is my opinion based on what I have seen all year...

Many poor decisions on high tackles and holding the ball during that game.

Don't get me started on where the junior finals are held. Last year they were held at Woodend's Junior ground one weekend. Not only was it snowing and about 5 degrees it was an absolute bog all over.

Clearly something needs to be done about finals allocations in this comp for both juniors and seniors.

It seems that the biggest factors are who puts in to host them and which teams play in them.

I'd like to know what criteria needs to be met in order for a tender to be successful. Going by some of the posts on here, as long as the only the minimum clubs put in, you're guaranteed to get a final.

Must admit I used to always thank the umps for letting the games flow as we felt this exact thing was happening in our first 5-6 games, up to 50-60 free kicks being paid - I do agree about Saturday kato2 I too was scratching my head at times both ways.

You dont know what happened to the big forward (#1 i think) from Rockbank? He was throwing it around a bit early and then I dont think I saw him after qtr time, obviously got injured, not badly I hope?

No 1 is Dave Innella and I believe he took himself outta the game. I believe he may have retired, he's 34 and been having trouble with a knee and a thumb/wrist injury.
