Am I the only one who doesn't get the "the game is dying, we need to change it, it's broken and needs to be fixed" talk doing the rounds? Every few years a new 'threat' to the game emerges, or a new tactic that people dislike, and after a few seasons coaches and playres figure it out, the strategy becomes obsolete and a new strategy emerges. It's a dynamic league that's cyclical in many senses. Is it just the flavour of the month topic (Goodes aside), or are people genuinly concerned with the state of the game? Has this not been one of the most balanced and unpredictable seasons in years?

Is it ugly though? Sure there's a lot more congestion, but the peak passages of play improve every generation as far as I'm concerned, as skill, athleticisim and specialisation increase. Yeah it's hard to not love the early 2000s brand, when there was plenty of skill and athleticism but the still the hard edge of the 80s and 90s left in the game, but the game still produces exciting moments at a rate consistent with previous years. And what happens when someone realises that two of the top three teams are playing essentially attack at all costs, play on whenever you can. If the Eagles or Hawks win the flag with fast, attacking football, do you think there'll be a mad scramble to emulate the Sydney method of football?

The best stuff is still sublime but the bulk of it does feel like it's getting progressively more bogged down with stoppages. Mind you, I watched the Wallabies v Boks test the other weekend and the amount of time they wasted setting the scrum and with the ref talking to the player was just ridiculous. Small mercies, etc. etc.
