How much do you read, when, more than one book at a time, fiction, non-fiction or the Collingwood club magazine?

I read a fair bit. In my job of course I read long documents all the time, so often I just want to veg in front of the TV, (thank god for Fox Sports and Super Simpsons Saturday) but I still get through a lot of books.

At the moment my main book is John Le Carre's The Constant Gardener, a spy novel. I'm also trying to read Oscar and Lucinda (Peter Carey), a David Malouf book, I just finished Warwick Todd, and I constantly dip into my cricket and footy collections, eg AFL 2001, Test Cricket Lists, etc etc etc etc

I read novels and textbooks for school, I read novels for the hell of it, I read sports magazines, I read newspapers and internet articles. I'm a big reader.

The Hitman

Mostly non-fiction

History, Military Science, Biography & Science texts like Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Physics, Geology and so forth.

It can get a little stale reading that sort of material all the time, so I like to get a cheap piece of pulp fiction every now and again as a breaker. In those instances, I'll read anything other than a Romance novel (I have read and loved 'Gone with the Wind')

Once a year (sometime during the year) I read 'The Hobbit' and 'LOTR.' I've read them now over twenty times although I don't otherwise enjoy the Fantasy genre.

I read Dickens 'A Christmas Carol' every year at .....Christmas. For fun, I like to bring the tabloids to work and read to everyone about vampires and alien babies. Peace,

Peace,

Mooster

I read a fair bit, too. Mostly fiction and some bigraphys. Whatever strikes my fancy at the library and, more often than not, whatever my Mum borrows as well. At the moment I'm reading for the second time Papillon.

I read a fair bit - im into the fantasy genre and seem to get into those books

Mostly read just before going to bed, helps me get to sleep :p

Papers - on work days, almost cover to cover. Non-work days I don't really buy papers. they are usually just to fill in time during lunch breaks and smoko's.

Books - sporadic at best. Miss one night, and the whole cycle is shot to hell. If it's a subject I have a huge intersest in, I read very quickly. Read a 350 page Iron Maiden biography in a day and a half... read Marcus Clarke's "His Natural Life" (950+ pages) in 4 or 5 days... other stuff I struggle to get through 20 pages a night.

Read a fair bit I guess, net, news-papers, magazines (not so much) books and of course, comics.

Mostly read for personal enjoyment so 'heavy' text's dont really get to much (historical and the like) of a going over.

Really am a bit of a cheap detective noirish storys fan. Otherwise, good Sci-fi (lots of bad Sci-fi out there) fantasy (same) sports and some auto-biographical stuff.

Really I guess its if it takes my fancy. Most books get knocked over (say average length 350 pages) in a day or two maximum.

Im a bit of a reader, read a lot on the internet, the paper most days (only really the sport and today sections though) and i read novels, usually have one on the go all the time.

Right now im reading Flood Tide by Clive Cussler which i have read before and after that its on to his new one which i got for christmas, Valhalla Rising!

How much do you read,

in the past 12 months I have read

* The Hobbit (2nd time)
* The Lord of the Rings series (2nd time)
* The 4 Harry Potter books
* 2 Bill Bryson books - Downunder and A Walk in the Woods
* The Stand by Stephen King
* The Power of One by Bryce Coutenay
* Romulus My Father (forgot author's name)

* Read numerous chapters/stories from a heap of footy and cricket books.

I also have a look through most of the major papers around the Australia and occassionally New York Times, Guardian and Washington Post.

Have also read 100's of childrens books.

Currently reading Schindlers Ark by Thomas Keneally and started Midnight Diaries by Boris Yeltzin.

dont count work related reading,

I subscribe to the New Yorker, which is a bloody brilliant weekly, and has the best cartoons bar none. (cartoonbank.com, check it out!). Get the FT delivered...read the best interview with Paul Keating in it a few years back...very funny.

Read the aussie papers on line most days, and the pommy broadsheets are ok. Anyone who loves spending saturday/sunday mornin in bed readin the papers would be in heaven here, there must be a dozen daily papers here. Daily Sport would be to of the list quality wise.

Book wise, just finished Gerald Stones memoir of his Ch9 years, a bio of Charles II, Gallipolli by Les Carlyon and re read Jeremy Paxman's The English (a great read). I lost a bet and had to read Harry Potter, which was classic english pap, done well.

I think half my life is spent building shelves to store books...i'm a sucker in a 2nd hand bookstore.

When uni is on - textbooks are the only thing I really have time for.
:(

During the breaks I like to read a lot. Mainly fiction (thrillers etc) for a bit of relief from the heavy texts.

I also read non-fiction history books, and historical fiction. Next year after uni is finished, I plan to sit down and re-read the 5 (hopefully 6 by then) 'Roman' books by Colleen McCullough.

Awesome stuff if you're interested in Ancient Rome.

I havent been read much over the last few years...I find after being at work for on average 10 hours, then averaging 1 or 2 hours study a night - my brain is almost ready to explode. When I do read it is usually something light either comedy or self reflective or something I can break down into small sittings (papers, mags, net etc)

I read a lot. I read the newspapers most day, but I'm not good in the way I only read what interests me, which isn't much I don't s'pose. I read a lot of fiction. I don't read all the time, I hadn't read for about 6 months until recently, but when I am in the reading mood, I'll read quite quickly. I've read about 7 novels in the past 3 weeks. I do like non fiction as well, but just like with newspapers, I'm very selective, a lot of non fiction bores the hell out of me, and quite often with nf I have a very short attention span.

I read the Australian (for news and opinion) and the Herald-Sun (for the sports and the always hilarious opinion and letter sections) during the week, and the Weekend A.F.R. on Saturday. I usually don't read the weekend editions of the Age, Australian, or Herald-Sun. I normally do an hour of reading before going to sleep. There's no real theme to the things I read....if it's good writing and it gets my interest, I'll read it.

I spent today at Make It Up 2 and bought up plenty of fanzines....so there's even more reading for me to do.

Speaking of comics, you might want to track down a booklet called "How Comics Can Change The World". You should be able to track down a copy at www.noise.net.au/comics or e-mailing comics@noise.net.au

The booklet is an anthology (with biographies) of some of Australia's young female comic artists. There are some brilliant artwork in this booklet and plenty of interesting views about doing comics.

What do you think of the Le Carre? Do you think he's lost his touch since the fall of the wall? Substituting powers like drug companies for the KGB as villians?
I'm reading two great books....William Darlymple's To the Holy Mountain [a great journey] and the funny and true Kitchen Confidential as well as some mags...some old New Yorkers, the last Bomber mag and an HQ I bought 'cause the guys from West Wing were on the cover. And the fourth Harry Potter as I am having trouble sleeping..it puts you into another simpler world and stops you from worrying.
