Tonight was a great win no doubt. But we did only beat Carlton. There have been a few mentions of the Geelong game plan coming out, but in all seriousness, we were killed in clearences.

If that was to happen against a decent team, we would get smashed.

Big big big ups to Wojak, scarlett, enright and Hunt, who ran the ball out well all night. But all our attacking moves can not come from rebounds.

I ****en rated our game, i know it was carlton, but we were so much harder then them, it was fantastic. I know it as carlton, we should do OK next weekend.

dont get me wrong, top game tonight. but in between, there were quite a few ordinary decisions, that against better oposition, would hurt us more than tonight.

reality check? guys enjoy the moment!

we dont decide who we play against, just enjoy the fact we smashed a team that have been ribbing us all week and that we played outstanding football.

For this weekend at least lets enjoy reading the papers about us

Smashed in clearances? I don't know what the final tally was, but I'm sure we were only down by 2 at 3/4 time tonight....hardly a smashing.

Anytime you can average just on 10 possessions per scoring shot is a pretty good day/night. I think up until 3/4 time we were averaging 2 scoring shots per 3 inside 50's too. That is pretty darn efficient if you ask me.

You are spot on...saw the same stat at 3/4 time...

Clearly this week we played a harder running style and when it counted we did no worse than break even statistically with clearances...we did ok with clearances last week too but the doggies won the significant ones in and around the scoring zone or that lead to scoring..I bet we did the same thing this week too....so stats never tell the whole story.

I cant figure it...even if we tried to play this style of footy last week I just dont feel we had the selected side to carry it out in the first place from what I saw tonight so last week remains a kind of mystery to me now.... The forward line set up this week particularly second half was often in the diamond shape of four that the Swans try...tried to get favourable midfield match ups moving forward like Ling on Stevens in the last. There was an effort to genuinely crumb to the taller forwards...and we often had an extra guy back in their defense...but he often seemed to have a man so it was interesting to see us employing these tactics compared to last week.

Bomber saying we were filthy on ourselves for last week so this week was making amends is something I am having trouble relating to because they dont seem to be comparable even in their planned effort to be similar game styles.

Aren't people's perceptions funny? Last week we got within 4 goals of the Bulldogs, and people were talking up how good the Dogs were and how crap we were. True we were average at best last week but to get within 4 goals of a top 4 side playing average football against a team who many people said killed us is a good effort.

Then we come into last night's game and play fast, direct, attacking football and blow a team off the park by 13 goals and people come out and say "you were only playing the wooden spooners". Guess if we do the same next week against the Demons then we might gain back some respect. It's obvious we haven't got any yet.

I don't think we'll really get any until we play West Coast, Freo (both at SS) and Port (at AAMI) rounds 7-9. Win at least two of them, and people will view us more positively. Assuming we do reasonably in the next four rounds, that is.

I too remember the 3/4 time stat about the clearances, about even IIRC.

Sure we'd like it to be higher, but given the low base we were coming off (ie. in the last two years) you can't expect our clearance numbers to go through the roof in such a short amount of time. Hopefully we can see continued improvement in that area over the next year or three.

But I agree with the original poster, the great teams in the competition can't and do not rely on predominantly generating their attacking moves off half back. In the 2007 AFL Prospectus, 28% of Geelong's 2006 score came from attack launched from the back line, and other teams with this high stat included Richmond, Bulldogs, Essendon, Kangaroos, Hawthorn, and Carlton. Tellingly, however, last year's prelim finalists were less reliant on scoring from backline thrusts: Freo (22%), Adelaide (20%), West Coast (20%) and Sydney (18%).

Yet it is good to see that some improvement has been made over the first two weeks v. last year and let's hope more is to come.

Still alot of room left for improvement, however, but it's good to get a bit of momentum happening and just gotta try to continue with that next week.

yeah sorry, they had it on the small screen in the pub up here. I miss read it. Thaughtit was 28-16 at 3/4 not 28/26. Still think last night, although a great win, was nothing too significant
