Hey,

Just wanting to see who else on here collects vinyl. I am forever adding to my collection (around 800).

I started wanting to emulate DJ Shadow, so I originally played at hip hop bars in the early 00's.
From there, I got into sampling and collecting all types of weird/good stuff.

The things I go after include, but are not limited to:

-Soundtracks
-Funk/Soul
-Psych/Garage
-Hip hop
-Classic Rock
-Library music (late 60s and 70s provided a lot of work for jazz composers)

And anything with a cool story behind it makes me interested. The history of vinyl is a good way to discover new music, I find.

One of my latest finds was a limited press Garage compilation. Here's one of the songs on it which I'm diggin'.

I would love to hear what you guys are collecting!

you should be at the Curtin tonight seeing endless boogie - new York guys who make a living buying and selling collectable vinyl - I'm sure they'll be playing a Sydney show

I used to collect a lot of punk and proto punk vinyl and bootlegs - Stooges, Johnny thunders, MC5. Lou Reed etc - all boxed up in a shed at the moment

i have about 250 but stopped buying once gigs dried up. just can't justify ~$20 for a single track when there's beatport. wouldn't even know where to buy it these days since VW and chemical shut down.

I guess it depends what you buy. And yeah, it's an expensive habit.

I just forked out $100 for a rare psych/funk 45. LOL

almost all my listening these days is through the sound entertainment system/gaming headphones or car stereo. just can't justify vinyl while the 1200s and HD25s sit gathering dust.

if you love it, it's a bargain! :D must say though, i do NOT miss the hunt for unavailables. i just wanna listen and at least digital allows for that.

Think I've posted on this before so indulge me again. Stopped with vinyl circa 03. Reason being many new releases were bad quality pressing (too many sounded like they had used the cd master, overall quality of vinyl - GZ I'm looking at you and postage cost from overseas). Also hunting second hand vinyl became harder due to less in circulation post 1990 and eBay ruining the store experience. Probably have 500 or so, nothing compared to the cds I own. Here's a photo of some of my crates resting in front of some of my cds.

What was the 45?

Jesus Christ that's impressive :thumbsu:

Started collecting vinyl in my early teens the late 80's, at it's peak my collection topped 5000 albums. I started collecting Kiss albums after my uncle gave me Kiss Alive on vinyl, then I went after the US versions of the albums, then Japanese then UK etc. I had the complete Kiss catalogue on vinyl probably 10 times over, from different countries. Then I started doing this with Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Black Sabbath and a bunch more. I then got into the murky world of vinyl bootlegs. Missprints were another thing I looked for.

I got addicted to Japanese vinyl, they nearly always had bonus stuff that came with albums, posters, stickers etc, so the mission was to find these as well. Of course the Japanese albums came with the obi, the paper band that's wrapped around the cover. I had to find M/NM albums, with the extras plus the obi. Some Obi's, like the Japanese first press of Hendrix's Axis: Bold as love are worth more than the record itself, that is if you can find it. Fake Obi's started popping up in the late 90's as well, there's always a few on ebay. Living at home, no mortgage, no real bills, I was spending money like a mother****er on this stuff.

Back then it was the Trading Post, Goldmine magazine, Record Collector from the UK and some others. Pawn shops as well and record fairs. Once the net happened and ebay came about it just wasn't as much fun as it used to be for me. Sounds dumb but it was too easy, although the net was great for new info, I thought i knew it all about what I was interested in then I'd find something I never even knew existed, mainly the Japanese stuff.

I ended up selling most of my collection off about 10 years ago, I also collected Bill Graham/Fillmore posters and Japanese posters. I got ****ed over hard in a deal for about 20 or so Japanese albums and it turned me off, another reason I stopped. I still check the net for what's selling but the market has plummeted for certain items.

Here's a couple of Hendrix singles from Japan, these 2 were from the lot I got burnt on. Had them mounted. Turned out OK I think.

Yeah man, I'm totally addicted.

I've been buying records for around four years, and I have roughly 1,800 12's and LP's (though about 250 are shitty things that I've inherited and haven't bothered selling/dumping at the Op Shop yet... no doubt some of them will end up being fed to my MPC and thrown out afterwards). I also have maybe 100 odd 7's.

Not sure how to describe what I like. Mostly "black music": funk, jazz, disco, house, techno, soul, african stuff, and the occasional hip hop thing, but anything really. Synth Pop, 70's psyche, Industrial. Whatever.

Don't know if I've spent $100 on a record yet. I think the most I've paid is around $75, and only because I found a bunch of (Chappell) Library records in the $2 bin at Heartland and managed to sell a bunch of them for $30+ each. There's plenty of expensive records on my want list, but things like this appear every week so that's where my money goes:

Great tunes you posted!

Hell yeah! Fellow record/crack addicts unite!

And what a day for it huh? Happy record store day. I'll post a pic of my haul later.

Oh and funny you mention the library records. I had a similar find at the old channel ten building out at nunawading. I basically got given their old catalogue because i worked there and they were going to trash them (!!!!)

I ended up with 400 from that. Sold about 300 I thought were all crap. I did stuff up on a few.

But yeah, we have extremely similar tastes. I'm going to start doing a podcast pretty soon playing my collection. Kinda like a radio show.

Good luck! I'm gotta give RSD a miss this year... I found it a bit difficult dealing with all the crowds last year, plus I'm saving money for the Kew Record Fair tomorrow- there's a collector i know of parting with a stack of soul/disco/deep house and I'm fairly sure there'll be gold in those crates. Plus last time it was on I bought a bunch of reggae 7's blind, and ended up making a very tidy profit :D

I used to collect and at my peak had 2000 or so, mostly late 70's early 80's punk, ska and miscellaneous "alternative".

Have now sold most of them as I never got the chance to play them plus when early Australian "Clash" 7" singles are going for over $100 a pop it all gets too tempting.

Best score in my opinion was selling a first pressing of The Damned's debut album and recouping enough $$$ to buy and have shipped to me a gorgeous Fender Jazz Bass with Lake Placid Blue colouring :D
