Recruiting older players

It may well be a move made from Round 1 2017 but it was demonstrably the wrong move in the Prelim. Everyone should be capable of admitting that now.
He could barely move. He wouldn't have handled the first quarter blitz better than any defender did. Playing him severely underdone anywhere was the wrong move.

To be fair, he did do an ankle during the game which probably contributed to that.

He injured his foot/ankle early in the game, hence the moon boot at Wacky Wednesday. His knee wasnt the problem, although the rust from being so long out because of that knee was a big factor.

Alternatively, you don't want too many young players either.

People say that they don't want a team of veterans.

Well, just as bad is a team of youngsters, with no-one over 25. They lack experience, and get smashed, especially against top teams.

I remember in 1998-99, when Ayres had retired Ablett, Couch, Brownless and Bairstow. We had a young team and got smashed most weeks.

The best combination is 3-4 30+ players, a bunch of 23-29 year olds, and a bunch of 18-22 year olds.

Then, as the 30+ players retire, the 23-29 year olds become the veterans, the 18-22 become 100-150 game players and meet the middle, and then they can help the newbies settle into the game. Rinse and repeat.

Having any age bracket lacking makes an unbalanced team. So, it is best to have all of them, and bring into the club what you lack.

For example, we were short of 23-29 year olds, so we went out and got Dangerfield, Henderson, Smith and Scott Selwood.

With Enright retiring, we need another veteran to provide that experience, so we go after Deledio.

We lack a bit of youth in our backline, so getting Zac Thouy, (who I think is 22) gives us a player who can play down back when Mackie and Lonergan retire.

From 2011-2015 we've only drafted six players inside the top 40.

2011 - Hamling (32), Kersten (34)
2012 - Thurlow (16)
2013 - Lang (16), Jansen (36)
2014 - Cockatoo (10)
2015 - N/A

Two already gone for nothing with a third soon to follow and it's not sounding likely for much. Lang being floated as a possibility to be traded for a guy six years older than him too.

Our first pick this year is 38 and we might not even hold onto that either. Doesn't leave us with much to show draft wise in regards to top end talent for a six year stretch.

Some of that is due to expansion, some of it is due to trading for quality established players.

And obviously we've picked up some value in later picks over these years (Murdoch, McCarthy, Kolo, Menegola, Gregson) but most of those are role/depth players, not cornerstones to build a team around.

I'm all for recruiting older players for a full blown crack at a flag in the next few seasons; but I'm getting a bit concerned about this potential hole in our list in four or five seasons.
