Just looking at last year and this years draft selections i'm wondering if we have a policy regarding interstate kids.

As always you run the risk of some wanting to go back to their home state as we have seen many a team at other clubs.

What we seem to have done the last 2 years intentionally or unintentionally
is draft 2 kids from the same club/u/18 state team.

Last year we had 2 South Aussie lads from the same club, then this year we have 2 WA state reps.

Anyone else think this has actually been factored in when recruiting interstaters in that having someone they know already moving over with them will make them less likely to get homesick and wanna come home.

Thoughts?

Its a big Risk taking an interstate kid, we do have a couple from 2004 and 2005 draft. Not all of them decide to go home, but its likely that one of them will. Hopefully not though.

I just want the club to take the best available talent in any draft ...where they come from should not even be considered

It shouldn't be, but i believe clubs are recruiting kids from the same state to try and offest this factor slightly.

Collingwood had all Victorians, Crows 3 South Aussies from 4, Brisbane took 2 Qld kids, Port took 3 South Aussies from 4 picks.

It's all well and good to pick the best talent but if they are going to leave you after a few seasons after you have put the development in clubs might start to shy away a little at so many interstaters.

I don't think the clubs factor that into whether they draft them or not. The reason why Adelaide and Port would pick SA youngsters is they are the ones they have seen the most. Same with Brisbane picking Queenslanders. If the player is any good and wants to go home more often than not the club trying to poach him will pay over the odds in a trade anyway. Eg. Fremantle with Josh Carr.

The 'Go Home Factor' shouldn't be seriously considered by the recruiters. All players should be professional enough not to use homesickness as an excuse

I agree clubs probably dont not recruit a player because of where they are from.

The point of this thread was to ask are we in our recruiting process doing something about trying to alleviate the go home factor by drafting kids from the same teams /groups so they dont feel so alone when shifting.

If this was the case its a good ploy as the players would fell less stress about moving and settle in much quicker with a familiar face also sharing the experience.

Mitch Clark to Brissy will be interesting scenario as it sounded like he was so so on actually being drafted there.

I can't think of a big name player who has left Victoria to return to their home state (Jarman - but that was kind of different). I'm sure there must be, but its not nearly as common as Victorians returning home. I wouldn't worry about it

Not too many do ... but a recent example is Scott Thompson who left Melbourne last year after they put several years into developing him and he was just starting to hit his straps.

I know a Sydneysider who joined the club in 1974, and is still in Melbourne, a West Australian who came to Carlton in 1981 and is still here (although has just stepped down from the board), and a couple of handy South Australians who came over in 1986 and are still domiciled in Melbourne. In fact I find it hard to think of any interstate players recruited by Carlton who have actually left Carlton of their own accord to return home and play with an interstate AFL club. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Was there a player to leave us on his own accord for any reason pre-Hamill in 2000?

Carlton used to be a great place to be. I can't wait till it's that way again.:thumbsu:
