Would pick 22 (well it will be after various compo picks are awarded) be enough for OShea and Butcher?

oshea is contracted and a good player.

i dont think we would trade him unless he was quite adamant about wanting out (which seems almost impossible) or we were using him to get a big deal over the line that we couldnt do without letting him go.

we can do the ryder deal without letting oshea go.

if he was uncontracted and asking out pick 22 would get it done yes.

so we can get him for a 3rd rounder then..burgo will fix his hamstring, put some muscle on him and we have a classy 6ft midfielder..sweet...

:) thats what i would be looking at best case scenario. this gws bullcrap about wanting a first rounder for JOR is an absolute joke

Not sure what Ryder has to do with it. My point was that if we were trying get Cameron (and let's be honest, he would be a great get) it would take a lot more than what you suggested.

I'm saying we will get Ryder anyway we don't need Cameron. Ryder is the missing piece, he helps Lobbe in the ruck too.

Why post Pick 16 + Moore for Cameron then?

It was a hypothetical of what I'd offer (at most) from the current resources we have.
In that case, back to my original point. GWS would think you were joking.

Dealing in hypotheticals, if we could get one of Ryder and Cameron (without trading away a key player) I would choose Cameron every day of the week.

If that's the case then I think he's not worth it.
I would have offered more if our list was in it's 2012 stage. Ryder will be a very good get though :)

We're not getting Cameron. And even if we were getting Cameron, we'd be getting him next year when he comes out of contract. Not even worthy of discussion.

That Irish bloke gave Anthony Wilson a bath in the Grand Final and can kick better after 5 minutes playing Aussie Rules than most of the guys at his club. EAD Norwood.

So what's the long term list strategy then?

Cornes, Schulz and Logan are the only players in the retirement bracket and realistically they could both play another two years at least. Westhoff, Carlile and Stewart are the next oldest and all three could play for another 2-5 years. Our midfield and backline could very easily have another 10 years together. The point is that if we are trading for a player they need to either fit into our starting 22, be happy to be back up or be a long term prospect.

Ryder and Lowden fill our ruck/forward needs now and in the future. Lowden would also be back up.

If we got a back in, who do they replace? If we got a small forward in, who do they replace? If we got a midfielder in who do we replace?

I think there is little point in trading Clurey, Butcher, O'Shea, Newton, Young, Moore for draft picks when we will lose ready made players who could take us to a flag for players that won't be ready for 3-5 years. Likewise why would we trade those same players for other players that may have potential - Liam Jones, Rhys Stanley, Levi Greenwood, etc. These guys are no better and have no more potential than the players we would have to trade for them.

If a player wants to leave then we get the best deal possible but otherwise we have a great squad that could win a flag. No need to mess with the formula too much. After we get Ryder and Lowden/Gorringe type then we draft young players who will be happy to spend 3-5 years developing by which time spots will become available.

hehehehe in all seriousness though, what player would you be looking at for him/or a ball park pick?

Well personally I would take a packet of chips, Can of coke and a Mars bar.

But the club probably see him as the next key forward in line, our reserves leading goal kicker and a former #8 draft pick. Would expect your second rounder at minimum

I agree. If we could somehow land Cameron, I'd easily take him over Ryder if I had to choose one.

The other thing I think people are ignoring on team harmony and bonds is that although there are lots of close friendships between players in a club of course, they're also not completely stupid and realise talent is key in professional sport. Bringing someone like Jeremy Cameron into the team would be very exciting for them too, not just us fans. They know better than any of us how important adding a gun CHF to the team would be. Also, he may be a top bloke himself anyway (actually, he almost certainly is if he asks to be traded to Port which would be the first requirement of this happening in the first place)! Every year there's a guaranteed 5 changes or so to the list anyway, so people always coming and going is the norm. And just because you're a star player, doesn't mean your a star person. More players may be much closer mates with a Stewart, Hitchcock, Heath type than with one of our stars.

The only problem I see is how the coaches actually bring up the prospect of being traded to GWS with one of our top players. I'm guessing you'd just use your read on the dynamics of player relationships and personalities and go from there. One of Hinkley's strengths is player relations so I'm sure if Cameron was seriously keen on coming here and Hinkley rates him personally, he'd weigh up whether there was a player of high enough value that would be open to the trade and have it not ruin their relationship if he said no thanks. But if in fact all our stars are really tightly knit and any trade for Cameron would truely destroy moral and trust, Hinkley's is the perfect type of character to pick this and safely avoid it in the first place. He definitely won't go the bonehead tactic of shopping around everyone in plain sight, Crows style.

Would be sad to see Levi Greenwood end up at Richmond. Hopefully we are at least looking at him?
