If you're 17 y/o and haven't been identified by an NRL already, I'd say you're missed the boat.

That is where you are extremely wrong. I think one of the greatest aspects of the NRL is that your age has little to do with whether you make it or not. Due to there being few restrictions on how many people you can 'contract,' many players don't even get recognised as potential NRL players until their early to mid 20's.

It is almost biologically impossible to decide at the age of 17, whether every kid playing the game will have what it takes to make the top grade, something which the AFL fails to recognise.

Canberra Raider's captain, Clinton Schifcofske, started playing rugby league when he was 16 years old.

He switched from soccer.

Thanks for the links, but it doesn't answer a simple question (typical of most websites).

Does each NRL team have a zone from which the youngsters are drawn ?.

Is there a player draft. eg. could a Cobar player end up at Brisbane ?.

On another question, what is the reasoning behind allowing players to sign with another club for next season, whilst still contracted and playing in a current season ?.

These are questions asked around a few ales.

Yes NRL teams have Zones, however this is mainly for development, and I think a first dibs system. There is no draft and players can get 'contracts' from as young as 12 years of age. (though mainly for development purposes). I am not completely up to date with how NRL recruitment works, but I am pretty sure it is closely aligned to that of the old VFL system.

in nsw, each club has it's cachment area which it sits on directly, eg. dragons - illawarra; tigers - campbelltown area etc.
the rest of the state is split into divisions, eg. riverina, north coast, monaro etc.
within those divisions, areas are split into groups. for example, the riverina division is split into three groups: group 9 takes in wagga wagga and the surrounding area; group 17 takes in ivanhoe and surrounding areas and group 20 takes in griffith and surrounding areas.
each nrl club is given a certain number of groups, and they get first dibs on recruitment from these areas. this tends to make them very aggressive with their recruitment, due to the fact that if they don't sign a talented player asap, another club will come along and poach them from under their noses.
so in answer to your question, if you are a good enough player, the club assigned your group, will be keeping it's eye on you.

Yes and no, they all have juniors, even the Roosters. (Berkeley-Wollongong)

Some teams get out and find new places all the time, I think Parramatta have something worked out with a NZ region.

Teams like Brisbane help PNG.

Plus they have Juniors at home.

No player draft, who ever spots you at the time usually gets first crack.

If Brisbane see you 1st, you could end up playing there.

I don't know.

Maybe it's to help players get on with knowing where they are going next year and it helps them settle quicker before the season starts.
Also if they have family, it gives them atleast 6 months to work out schools and jobs bla bla bla.
