McPhee,Dawson,Anthony,
Not a lot in terms of picks were traded but all three have been comprehensively slagged;is it beginning to look more like good selection.I think McPhee has been accepted while Anthony remains largely in the undecided box and Dawson is fast looking like an astute acquisition.Maybe the other two are too?
I'm quite happy with what they cost to get, given what they may provide.

I'm quite happy with McPhee. Has his weaknesses but overall is very valuable to the team. I remember being pretty unhappy about the 3 year deal at the beginning of 2010 but he's come a long way since then and settled in well.

Dawson I'm still not sure about, plenty for him to prove. Obviously Lyon likes him. Anthony is a dud IMO. But I'm curious to see how he goes given a proper chance.

About the same for me. Have somehow lost the believe that Anthony can have another 50 goal season. Hopefully he can prove me wrong...

McPhee is an AA player, and worthy of being so.

Would have been best 22 for most/every team over the past few years, yet our feral know nothing supporters feel the need to ride the guy into the ground wherever possible.

Our supporters are some of the worst in the league.

McPhee is always going to cop a bit of stick because he has brain snaps and is prone to skill errors at vital times. Good makes up for the bad. You know if you see him going for a ball he will put his body on the line every time and go as hard as he can. Hard not to respect that. Dawson has shown the same inclination thus far and in fact has a lot of similarities to McPhee. Does a good thing then does a bad thing. Drive you crazy but they go hard. McPhee can always be relied on for a few hangars too which is good to watch.
Anthony is also a hard nut. I was very impressed with his intensity at the contest in the pre-season games I went to. He's a decent size and can really kick, dragged down a couple of impressive marks too. Early days, I think under Ross he will contribute and surprise a few.
You have to admire the clubs rebuild strategy. Using early draft picks, astute rookie and mature age picks and un-contracted senior players they have built a really competitive outfit in only 4 years with all the areas of drafting adding value. Hill, Balla, Mora, Fyfe, Clarke etc with high picks, Barlow, Broughton, Silvagni as mature agers and the 3 discussed above as basically free gifts in the pre-season draft.
Compare us to Melbourne who dumped their senior players and put all their hopes in high draft picks without drafting any mature agers. They are a mess. Interestingly their best player last week was a mature age rookie in Magner. Other teams are finally cottoning to the value of this source of players. You can't win many games of footy with a bunch of kids no matter how talented they are. GWS got some cheap hard bodies for free and look how handy they are looking.

Only need to look at the horrendous bagging of Gerard Whately going on at the moment, embarrassing to say the least!

Just to be the devil's advocate here, this is Smokey's last year of his contract.

Will he get a renewal ?

I'm tipping year by year extensions.

Freo have a depth of young back flankers to develop and ideally, two years in the lower leagues and then occasional games in the seniors, alongside tough senior players.

Ross has identified Adam's best position is defence and it appears he is planning on a forward role for Silvagni. That leaves the other young draftees to develop playing with strong physical players nearby like Smokey .

Jack, I think will grab his opportunity and produce for us ; 40 - 50 goals a year.

We better get used to Dawson at fullback. He's going nowhere . The only other genuine alternative at FB is Alex Silvagni and I reckon Rossco is showing his hand there with Silv playing forward in the WAFL.

So , yes to smokey- one year contract .
Jack will fire - you don't forget how to play and he has age on his side.
Zac D , will prove to be an astute pick up. Most other clubs would have if they could have.

You could probably add Kepler in here?

I think given not much has been given up (which is a change from the Schwab days) I think overall it appears a success with these 4. I think if the 4 have a good year this year, you would say it has been great work by Freo with these recycled players.

Kepler is really competitive as a forward, played some really good games before injury last year and played well against Geelong.

McPhee cops a bit but has generally been okay. I think HB is his best spot and could have a really solid year this year.

Anthony struggled with form and confidence last year but has had a good pre-season and could be set for a good year.

Zac I think was a great pickup, given the age of Grover and McPharlin. Good move by Freo getting him.

As a Fremantle member I owe Gerard Whately absolutely nothing. If he chooses to be an unprofessional jerk he deserves what he gets. I have never bagged Adam McPhee, but if a commentator has an axe to grind about one of OUR players and abuses his privilege in the press by not letting up about it, he is fair game. Gerard Whately is a hypocrite. I never once heard him continue on about the antics of Mooney or Milburn, like he has Ballantyne. You can support him, I'll support Fremantle FC. Sorry if that embarrasses you.

I quite like Whately but from the sounds of it he's been on a week long vendetta against one of our players, basically using his supposedly professional position to act like a bigfooty-esque sore loser. (This is gleaned from comments from neutrals on the main board, not just the one eyed stuff on here).

Of course that's going to put people's noses out of joint.

Get off it, opposition supporters give him just as much shit as we have. He's gained a bad reputation with his brainfades, it sucks but that's what he has to live with.

I have no issue with your support of the club, and to insinuate that i somehow don't support the club is puzzling. What I'm talking about is the ridiculous name calling ie; 'Nerd', 'Never played the game' that kind of crap which is embarrassing. Disagree with Whately, but don't call into question his professionalism for having a strong opinion on our player, who in all fairness to Hayden was overtop for that elbow to the guts behind play.
I have no issue with the rest of his game, for it was he who essentially won the game for us. I understand that Gerard is a Geelong supporter, and like all journo's in the media they defend their respective clubs. But the name calling on a forum is just embarrassing.

There are Essendon, St Kilda, Hawtorn, West Coast, Brisbane supporters in that thread saying that Whately has not been fair in his criticism of Ballas. Like Esti said lots of neutrals on the main board thinking the same.

I will question his professionalism because Whately has been unprofessional. He has let his emotion and his love of Geelong cloud his judgement. His commentary of events during the game have been one-sided and biased. I expect more objectivity and fairness from him. My problem is not his issue with Ballantyne's lack of discipline, it is that he doesn't recognise it in his beloved Geelong and has certainly never harped upon it as much when Mooney or Milburn committed worse 'dog acts'.

This is a forum where we are absolutely allowed to question any people in the public eye to which Whately is one. He most certainly is also allowed to pay out on our club, our players etc, because that is his job, but when he seems to go Ballas over and over and over, it seems like he has some sort of axe to grind. And if he chooses to ignore the way the Cats players have played in the past and the way they played last weekend in roughing up our players etc well thats almost having bias when his position should be completely neutral. Thats where we come in, we get the opportunity to be completly biased and one eyed because its our board and it is a public forum.
Gerard Whately is a complete douche. He can Get ******

Would be fine if he showed a hint of it this week. Call a spade a spade, he was pathetic, and we have the right to call him out on it here.

I see similarities between Anthony and McKinley. Both starred for one season then turned to shit.

I'm sorry, I thought I was in the Recycled mutts thread, not the Whately thread.

Personally, I couldn't care less what he said. Haven't heard it, haven't even ventured into the thread. Don't care. He's a geelong supporter providing biased commentary of some sort. Who cares. Quit having brain aneurisms and forget about it, because:

1. there's nothing you can do about it
2. this sort of shit happens all the time.

Who doesn't bag the oppositions players at every opportunity and overlook when they play well?

2 idiots agreeing doesn't make it truth.
