Mike Hussey to lead full external review of SACA high performance program after three bottom-placed Sheffield Shield finishes

Former star Australian batsman Mike Hussey has been commissioned to undertake an external review of South Australia’s high performance program following three-straight Sheffield Shield wooden spoons.

Former star Australian batsman Mike Hussey has been commissioned to undertake an external review of the Redbacks’ high performance program following three consecutive Sheffield Shield wooden spoons.

Revealed by South Australian assistant and stand-in coach Greg Blewett, Hussey – nicknamed ‘Mr Cricket’ – has been appointed by the SACA board to take an in-depth look at why the Redbacks have struggled so badly in the past three seasons after making consecutive Shield finals in 2015-16 and 2016-17.

Their recent poor form, which saw them go 18 first-class games without a win until they beat Tasmania in Hobart in December, resulted in the sacking of coach Jamie Siddons at the end of the season.

SA has not won a Sheffield Shield since 1995-96.

This could make Dizzy the most in demand coach in the world if he can make this work.

Or his reputation will be left in tatters.

Elite youth cricketers are almost non existent in this state.

They have 'elite' squads, u17 and u19 every year, but it seems like years go by where no one from those squads ever go on to play state cricket.
Too many grade clubs and levels IMO

For decades the junior state coaches focused so hard on one skill. They wouldn't let all rounders be all rounders, everyone had to focus on one skill.
If you chose batting you might not bowl for 3 or 4 training sessions. It was purely dumb.

The system was horrid when i went through there in the early 2000s and its actually gotten worse from reports from inside the organisation.

Talent hasnt been the issue. Identification, coaching and pathyways are a big issue.

That does go against the Australian cricket team philosophy of "we have to have an all rounder"

FWIW I don't have an issue with that line of thinking. Batsmen are batsmen, bowlers are bowlers.

It was almost exclusive though and made no sense. Especially at teenage level where kids are stil growing into their bodies, learning, adapting, figuring out new skills.

Imagine theyd made glenn mcgrath focus on batting and never handed him a ball (he was a batsman in his teenage years).

Would've made 3rd grade?

Modern cricket its smart to have guys that can bowl in your batting lineup. Lose your key spinner to injury and your fast bowlers cant bowl 30 overs each in a day.
Also how handy was it having guys like warne, lee, gillespie, johnson and now pattinson etc who can go for a 100 partnership with a batsman.

The lack of coaching in those state junior squads was mentioned in the Hussey Review

No spin/pace bowling specialists at some levels which I believe is being changed now. Seems amazing that you wouldn't adequately resource your emerging talent, especially when you're a small state anyway with fewer players to focus on

I wouldn't use Glenn as an example, he almost exclusively bowled from his state career until his later test years

Most of the other guys you mentioned worked on their batting during injury layoffs like Cummins and Starc.

Yes but not in his junior career.
Up until about 15-16 he was a batsman.

This is my point. Imagine he'd been a half decent batsman (and in the elite pathways) and never been allowed to develop the fast bowling skill.

It makes sense for a 25 year old. Not for a 15 year old.

Australia has always had a higher requirement of bowlers holding the bat. And over the past 30 years its won us more than a few test matches.
It doesnt start with Cummins or Starc. Goes all the way back to the 90s. Warne, Gillespie, Lee etc making handy 20s, 30s that other test sides could never get from their tail.

That has more to do with mindset rather than technique.

It has to do with training other parts of the game.
Its why we were a good fielding side before anyone else too. It didnt matter if you were a 6 foot 6 fast bowler you were expected to field well.

Stanlake traded for Worrell in the Strikers team. Good trade for the Strikers imo. Stanlakes pace often proved a liability in the t20 format.
Bit of a "get the local boy home" trade really.

If Franky can stay fit he might be a good pick up, but Billy wasn't that bad.

Stanlake was a key for us when we won it but was terrible last season

Worrall is a great pick up. Injury free (fingers crossed) he's one of the best new ball bowlers around

That's always been the thing with Franky. Our bowling went from an absolute strength to a liability with the loss of Laughlin

Stanlake might go alright at the MCG bowling back of a length. Was not suited to Adelaide Oval at all and wasn’t bright enough to figure that out.
He was suited fine here when we won it

I reckon he lost a yard of pace and that (pace and bounce) was all he really had

You can get away with slightly poor control if you're express pace

He was to hit and miss and when it went bad he would set up the innings for our opponents. He also was a complete liability in the field and couldn't bat. I am really happy with the trade.

I am hoping we can get Renshaw. Our batting is still the issue I feel
