Good first year anyway and I agree about the no frills. We need 5 Joel Coreys/Enrights/Kellys that are big, hard and get it done.

When Conca builds a tank he will be a massive accumulator. I don't think he is as tall as listed I think we are playing funny buggers there. Looks more Marc Murphys height (179) than the 183 he is listed as.

After watching that footage a few times on replay it was clear as day that Conca was going for the ball but only decided at the last second to protect himself as Stokes had gotten to the ball before him, he tucked the arm up slightly for protecting but he was definitely going for the ball first.

yep dont know what they were looking at. went the ball relised not going to get there first and protected himself like a footballer should. the single best attempt to win the ball all year. this kid is going to be a star. always seems to be at the botttom of the pack, and on the outside.

Think he has more x-factor than many are letting on. He is brilliant in traffic, with the agility that Heppell lacks. The few times he's been in the guts this year he's done some pretty special things.
 
Still not sure... he was a surprise early pick, I've seen some good things and obviously he is not a disaster pick or anything but not sure if he will be an elite midfielder either.

I agree with all the attributes you described above. Where i differ is he is not as an elite kick that was reported pre-draft and that you also mentioned in your initial post. He has enough talent to become a very good kick, but naturally isn't a great kick. He gets under the ball too much; gives it a bit too much air and lacks penetration. I'm sure with his natural talent he can get better but will never be an elite kick say like a McKenzie for GC, Buckley, etc...

You have to take into account the fact that he had surgery on his Ankle(?) or Foot and had no pre-season at all, and anybody who has had any sort of injury to there Leg can testify to the fact that you lose quit a lot of power in your leg/foot, and without the pre-season it makes it even harder.

Some of the FJ picks have a certain look about them, he is better than Oakley Nicholls but moves a little like him so something needs to be adjusted in the assessment area going forward IMO.

I see a little railway tracks Hughes about him as well.
Look at the lateral movement of Simon and you have direct opposites
 
Anyone questioning Reece's 1st year (without a full preseason mind you), has rocks for brains. We have unearthed a 200+game player, who possesses the evasive qualities of Shane Edwards, with the decision making to go with his more then solid execution.

He is 18yrs old, and I for one much rather see him with the ball then half our list. He is going to be a jet. Also, he is being severely undersold by some of our supporters claiming he lacks the x-factor to be elite, and will be no more then a "solid" long-term player for us.

Give him a couple preseasons, watch him, Martin, Cotchin, Deledio and (insert another 1st round midfield draft pick), take this league apart. Mark my words, Reece Conca has all the attributes to be elite.
 
One thing that can't be denied about the 3 first year boys this year is that they all love the contest and put their body on the line.
Makes a nice change.

I agree with you in the JON sense. Undoubtedly a little harsh as he is young and had ankle issues. However those things aside, I believe he doesn't 'cruise through traffic' but rather moves like JON and seems to have that uncanny trait of finding traffic and running in circles a fair bit of the time. However, as has been mentioned, time will tell and fingers crossed!!

I reckon he will be a damn fine player.

He is an 18 y.o who has played 15 odd games. Has shown that he can get the ball and use it pretty well. His skills will get better with his fitness and his speed.

Needs to play on the ball for the rest of the year, preferably as an inside mid to add another strength to his bow - he seems pretty outside at this stage.

Also needs to learn how to finish in front of goals, but that will come with confidence
 
I must be watching a different bloke to people who are even the slightest bit disappointed with Reece Conca.

Either than or we have lemmings who only have the same opinion as the media.

Reece has shown me that he will be a 200 game player of the highest standard. He will compliment our midfield going forward and be an accumulator that will rip opposition apart. Not a lot has been made on his attack on the ball but you would not see other draftees being mentioned ever do that. Reece can go inside and outside. He takes the game on.

Watch out after he has a pre season.

Been super impressed with him. Cotchin, Martin, Deledio and Conca.......we are getting somewhere in the midfield.

I am just saying I don't think he will be a Judd and so forth. Still can be a very good player(all australian rover etc..) as has the hips to knock his opponent rovers off the ball and can step etc....

The point is our recruiters need to be a little more switched on in my opinion regarding body types conducive to football performance in general as Conca makes up for it in other areas. Look at Geelongs list and their players are far more agile than ours for example. Something to consider going forward!!
 
he is an actual footballer, very rare in todays game, he wont tear games apart but he will be extremely consistent and everyone will see his worth in the long run.

wow imo thats way off

i think hes very agile acually, at full pace in close quarters his twisting, balance and change of direction is a feature. nothing like jon or cleve hughes,

Good Post. I agree he does get under the ball with his kicking. I thought he would have more penetration with his kicking, with the raps coming out of punt road wen we picked him up.
 
I think people just have different ideas of what an elite kick is.

The club always said he was very efficient with the ball and had elite skills by hand and foot. I think he has shown that. They never said he has a raking left/right foot. You don't have to able to kick 50 meters to be an elite kick. Ablett and Marc Murphy are good examples of this.

When he improves his fitness and confidence his kicking will be more consistent, I've seen him do some truly elite thinks by hand and foot, well weighted passes just out of reach of defenders but drop into the hand on Vickery on the lead etc.
 
I think Conca is a very safe bet. A guy who will not get the accolades of say the Cotchins and Martins and won't be the pure matchwinners that these guys can be, but he will be consistantly good for a long period of time. Premiership teams need those sorts of players. Not everyone can be a Judd, Ablett, Swan or Pendlebury but it's the lesser lights that allow those guys to shine. Happy with the pick.
 
I like Conca because he does in his first year stuff that says he can be a good AFL player. He gets the ball, a lot for a first year player. He uses it well and goes fairly hard. Without being a superstar he is a great first year player. Given he will put on bulk, fitness and learn to play AFL better I am happy. If he doesn't become absolutely elite he should become a mid 20 possesion per game player that uses it well - that is fairly much an A grade player. And he is learning the defensive side, so hopefully will be a stopper and goer. I'll take that for pick 6.
