Reiffel draws the curtain
Victorian Cricket Association - 23 January 2002

Bushrangers captain and greatest ever wicket-taker Paul Reiffel, today drew the curtain on his decorated career by retiring from first-class cricket. The retirement is effective immediately.

Bushrangers Chairman of Selectors, Shaun Graf commented on Reiffel's retirement this afternoon. "The decision came somewhat of a shock to us, but we respect Paul's decision and thank him for his enormous contribution to the team during his career, in particular the last two seasons as captain".

VCA Chief Executive Officer Ken Jacobs paid tribute to Reiffel. "The VCA would like to congratulate Paul on his fine career for both Victoria and Australia. Achieving the mantle as Victoria's greatest ever wicket-taker this season was both timely and deserved and we wish Paul all the very best in his future endeavours".

In selection news, the Bushrangers made two changes from the side defeated outright in the Pura Cup match in Perth against the Western Warriors. Along with Reiffel's retirement, Colin Miller has been omitted, paving the way for first-class debutants, 20 year-old Melbourne all-rounder Andrew McDonald and Prahran leg-spinner Bryce McGain, 29.

BUSHRANGERS: Jason Arnberger, Darren Berry, Matthew Elliott, Ian Hewett, Brad Hodge, Mathew Inness, Michael Klinger, Michael Lewis, Andrew McDonald, Bryce McGain, Jon Moss, Matthew Mott (12th man to be named).

I guess this is a bit of a shock. The strength of the SS/PC 4 day domestic comp has been that the 72 players involved each round are the top 72 players pushing for international selection. That's been the weakness particularly of the English comp where most of those involved know they are never going to represent their country but find a comfort zone inside county cricket and are satisfied with their lot.

Congratulations to Paul for his contribution to the game in Australia and for knowing the right time to get out.

I'm suprised Darren Berry has been picked again. Its time to give Roach a game.

Yeah, it worked so well last time. The whole side fell in a miserable heap. What its time for, is to give Berry the captaincy he should have had years ago when he seemed to be just about the only one putting in

Pity about Reiffell. Very under-rated bowler and an under-rated batsmen as well

yep, good luck pistol, fine bowler.

you think he would have seen out the season though.

If the team has no chance of playing finals & your retiring at the end of the year, why not retire earlier & give a young kid a chance ?

JubJub,

I agree with you there. Why isn't Cameron White in the Pura Cup squad?? He's only 18 or 19 I think, and made his debut in the ING Cup... looks a promising player for us.

Congratulations Paul, great career!! :):)

White is at the under 19 championships at the moment otherwise he would be there.29 year old leggie Mcgain from Prahran is in as the spinner. Also expect to see players like Jewell,Mcdonald,Kent,Dart,Klinger,Berger to get much more game time towards the end of the year.Hopefully they wont push Berry out his actual keeping is still the best but if they want to go for a keeper/batsman I think Roach can do the job.;)

White is playing in the under-19 World Cup in NZ.He'll be back for the next game.
The Vics weren't happy about losing him.

Sad to hear that Pistol's retiring, but it didn't come as a suprise to me considering he basically announced he'd be giving the game away the other week when he was guest commentating.

Enjoy retirement!

One quotation that wouldn't be out of place on 'Ripley's Believe it or Not' would be: "Damien Fleming and Colin Miller are dumped from the Victorian side but Matthew Mott survives. Belive it or not."

Great champion. Good luck to him. Pity Miller and Fleming are still not in the team though. I'm stunned that they continue to miss out on a regular gig. How Miller can go from Test Player of the Year or whatever it was to not even making the state side seems a little weird to me???

Not to criticize Cameron White at all, but the scottish under 19's would have thier hands full beating my team (the Murchison Football, Netball & Cricket Club, second XI).

But, about Paul Reiffel. He was never had a big personailty like Merv, or had the cocky swagger of Deano or Warney, and was harldy ever the darling of Bay 13, but he was the kind of bloke who was a captain's dream, and was well respected by those who love the game.

He bowled accurately, with his great off-cutters, usually getting that vital wicket, or selflessly setting up one (for the likes of McDermott or McGrath), and was a good tail ender, who made a great night watchman, and someone who no doubt had the batting talent to make a century in international level.

We're going to miss you Paul, because you knew when to take your cue and leave in place of some young talent
