I understand that Peter 'Dubai' Reith has announced his retirement from parliament at the next election. Does anyone know anymore about this?
I couldn't be happier about him going, but its still a suprise.

Is its Howards revenge as his Prime Ministership enters its last days?

No - the real story is that Reith is in real danger of actually losing his seat at the next election.

The Dubai affair, the telecard affair, his arrogant and bullying attacks on working people, his disdain for standards, his congenital hatred of the working class, his appalling hatchet job on Industrial Relations

Its all too much, his truly horrid deeds have finally caught up with him and he knows he is a dead man walking.

Desperate to try and shore up the Coalitions position in Victoria (they are in deep, DEEP strife here) Howard has no doubt asked for Reiths resignation in the hope that a fresh candidate in Flinders will stand a better chance at retaining the seat.

cheers

... or he just might be looking for a change of career.

Don't know too many country people who would disapprove of what Reith tried to do with regards the MUA.

Great Politician. Someone who genuinely tried to free Australia of the restrictive shackles of British trade unionism (amazing thing about Australian socialists. Get rid of the British queen but keep the British trade union system and leaders)

The ACTU party....ooops, I mean Labour party......will rejoice.

definately jumping off a sinking ship

i think the govt know all the mess ups that reithy has been invoved with will hurt them 10 fold at the next election..and lets face it the libs are gonna lose by a landslide..what a mess!

fat boy kim must be licking his chops...

Six months ago labour held a 15% lead over the coalition. Now the coalition is 3% ahead and Howard preferred as PM by 17% more than Beazley. Sinking Ship!!!!

It really looks odds on that the coalition will be re-elected. Apart from the polls of today there are two key issues that the election will be fought on :-

1) GST

Fair enough if labour were going to scrap it, but they wont and only want to tinker with it. And the more they tinker the less tax taken so there has to be service cuts or tax increases to pay for the tinkering. The GST has been a problem but Labour has no answers and wont repeal a system they were so loathsome about (except Paul Keating who advocated the GST first)

2) Vote ACTU

Their can be no doubt that with Crean, Ferguson etc in the cabinet the Spectre of Australia run by the ACTU will be pushed hard by the coalition. The swinging vorers, who decide election results, will be terrified of this.

Dream on Frodo-"Dishonest" Johnnie is dead in the water.

People dont take well to being constantly lied to, and will take their revenge at the next election.
Take the smarmy little turd out the back and shoot him, like we should have done 25 years ago.

Even his political mentor Fraser has come to his senses and almost seems apologetic for what he unleashed on us all those years ago.

Actually I think Fraser has gone senile.

Ignore the polls and dream of communist Australia Yokel. Where all are equal (except for the pigs {union bosses}) and industry grinds to a halt. Even better, mate, go to Russia and find out the results of communism. Or do you like to dream of communism whilst enjoying the wonderful life in Australia? Built by conservatism in between times of giving it all away and 16% mortgage rates by labour.
Why not take a look at reality rather than what has been brainwashed into you? We had just about the worst tax system in the world. Keating acknowledged us as a banana republic and wanted a GST. But Labour never had the guts to make change. Dole out money to Aboriginals, homosexuals and the like...that is about all they have been good for. Howard has made a big change in taxation for Australia. Yes there has been unforseen difficulties and he has to wear that....but he did it....he made a difference and good on him for doing so.
