Remembering Peter Motley

Peter Motley could have been the best SA player to ever have played at Carlton. Yes, better than Sticks, Bradley and all the rest.

He was a dead set star at Sturt and he was just in the process of establishing himself in the VFL as a brilliant player. Then some goose goes and ruins his life and robs him of what could have been a brilliant career.

Mots has gotten a lot better over the years but obviously he will never be right. I am just sad that we never got to see just how great he could have been.

Yep, yep, yep and yep.

They called him 'Hollywood' at Carlton,
and it was a goddam tragedy.

He's always out and about,
and one of the nicest people in the world.

Pretty much the consensus on this board. Not too many blokes you never hear a single bad word against. Not too many blokes become club legends after 19 games. :thumbsu:

I was drooling at the prospect of watching him develop... he seriously had the goods and as you said, he was possibly the best thing to come out of SA.

Then when the news came over the radio that he had been in an accident, I was shattered for him...

He hasn't ever let it get him down and although we dont see the whole story from outside, everytime he has been interviewed he seems to be on top of the world.

My dad is a huge Sturt fan and we sometimes go down to Unley Oval to watch them play (especially when they play my Panthers) and you sometimes see him out and about.

We've talked to him a few times and he is always polite and friendly and keen to have a laugh. It was a shame what happened to him but he has made the best of a bad situation and is a credit to himself, his family and football in general.

It's probably the reason why he is still remembered and thought of so fondly by the Blues fans.

Great to see the club still keeps in close contact with Peter. If you look at his CFC TV interview it's clear he's True Blue down to every drop.

He seems like quite the happy bloke as well - no. 1 ticket holder of Sturt wouldn't be bad...

I've also seen him often at Sturt home games wearing the double-blue scarf. Always cheerful and chatty.

He was dominating for Sturt in 84,85 winning the B&F. When Mots left for Carlton in 86 Todd Viney took over as the dominant Sturt player. When Viney left for Melb in 87, Whittlesea was the dominant Sturt player. When Whittlesea left for Hawthorn....

Terrific player Motley was

he was at the game at the Dome this year when we played Western Bulldogs. He apparently stayed in melb for the week & also attended the Hawthorn game as well.
he is looking rather well :thumbsu:
Still acknowledges the people who call out has name with a huge smile & a nod of the head.... you may even get one of these :thumbsu: from him if you are lucky.
At the Bulldogs game at the Dome (Etihad Stadium), he was also wearing a Navy Blue & White striped Tie..... Looked like one of the ones the players wear

I was devestated when I heard the news about Motts as he was just showing what a star he was going to be. He was the next best thing to sliced bread.
Now he is a star in his own rights showing the community that all that he has been through he can still smile and soldier on. He is a bloody champion.

Mots had an ordinary 1986 but in 1987 was absolutely on fire. I share others opinions by stating he would have been as good as Sticks and Braddles who are legends of the game. Who knows what may have eventuated in the following years? Premierships? Individual honours? Tragedy.
