And Vinny had more pace and class than Houla AND Carried an AFRO, this is what the kids of today just don't understand!

Thanks for the vid - that's great. For one magnificent year (1978) Vinnie was untouchable. He had the name "Spinner" because he could elude any opponent. I don't think I saw him get tackled once during that season. Sadly the spell wore off sometime during 1979 and that was it for the original 'Fro.

A lesson in not throwing youngsters into the deep-end too soon. I remember the debate on how the '73 GF might have turned out differently if they'd selected Ashman instead of Vinnie. I don't think it would have made much difference - we lost that game at the senior end of the list. It was idiotic to blame a first-gamer for our showing that day. I reckon we were doomed when Barry Armstrong's appendix blew up the fortnight earlier.

Great vid! I remember seeing Catoggio in my first game at PP in '78. His parents owned the local milk bar opposite Princes Park High about 2 blocks from the ground. Played my first ever 'Space Invaders' in their shop - ahhhh the good old days! :thumbsu:

I remember that Vinnie was the master of the baulk and blind turn...It was like he used all these evasive soccer skills for the footy field.

But the Afro is legendary.

Sensational player in his day and more importantly a top bloke. Had the pleasure of meeting him when he came down to assist Jezza at Coburg in the early 90's.

Gave me some great advice as a young skinny kid playing in a FP

Great man.......great post!!!:thumbsu:

Reckon Laurie Fowler's kneecaps might be able to claim some influence. The old man swore the entire Southern Stand jumped a foot off the ground when the great man hit the ground.

Geez I love those sort of memories. Priceless. :thumbsu:

Vinny was an absolute delight for the young fans. I remember him coming to my school Rathdowne St Primary in 1979 with Alan Hamilton (a reserves player). He was so nice and seemed to spend an eternity at the footy clinic and signing autographs etc. The only reason we finished was that the teacher wanted to get home early and ended the clinic. I met him a couple of years ago at a past players reunion and he is still such a lovely genuine person who is still navy blue through and through. :thumbsu:

He was a dynamo in '78,
i reckon it was about that time 'the whistler'
started up in front of the old press box.

Just couldn't get a look in once carpet shoulders and Johnston arrived,
with Jimmy, Ashman, Armstrong and Keogh already being there.

But that year in '78,
he was a scorcher.
