I know its an old debate, but with such a promising group playing in the reserves
isnt it time to re-consider playing the team in the Canberra League. They have to play in the VFL. Up against the best of the rest vic clubs reserves. The Canberra league does not battle harden young players to prepare for the rigours
of the seniors.Just my opion any thoughts?

As has been said many times before, its a cost factor that forces us to play in Canberra rather than in the VFL in whatever form that would take. Yes having a stand alone team in the VFL would be what we all would want, but we can't afford it and nor can we afford a joint venture with another VFL club.

So rather than bringing up the same old debate which will bring up the same old slanging matches, remember why we are in Canberra in the first place -MONEY.

But we are here to win a flag and that means whats best football wise.

Sure, but you must accept that the club doesn't have unlimited resources. It therefore has to make some choices about what to invest in. If it came to a choice between playing the reserves in a different competition but losing a couple of the coaching or other support staff, as an example, would you still the reserves changed competition.

Alternatively, how about if every membership went up by $20? With around 25,000 members between Sydney and Melbourne, that would raise an extra $0.5m which would go some way to funding extra expenditure like this. I would be quite happy to pay that extra (or more) - after all, for a Sydney member it is less than the cost of a beer at each home game - but given the uproar by many when prices increased for the 2009 season, I suspect a large number of members would object.

It currently costs a VFL team $35.000 to travel interstate, so with say 9 away games and say CPI we could do it for $350,000 approx. so your idea of say $20 a member has some merit. Just the better standard of footy which would make for an easier transition to senior footy would make it worthwhile and surely the AFL could see the benifits and subsidise it to some degree. Also ALL players on the list would be allowed on the ground at anytime, not the pathetic situation we have now with some rookies spending a quarter running up and down the boundary.

I always think when you get these glowing reports of how well the ressies are going with a huge thumping over their opposition are we reallyu getting a true reflection of how good our up and comers are. A couple of players do bad and we are saying bring in this guy or that guy and well usually first up it is a four or five possession start. From memory Schneider had a decent debut (Tough to see him doing so well when we need exactly his type of player to have that small crumbing option) but not that many great debuts after.

Yes it is a money factor so is playing games at ANZ but all detremental to success which surely means more dollars anyway.

Need to play in a league testing our players not one tough game every five matches. AFL should kick in to have a reserves comp up and running that can top up from feeder clubs ghiving those guys a taste of elite level and big crouds before the main game.

Barlow had a great debut against Brisbane
Grundy had such a great debut against Richmond that he earnt 1 Brownlow vote.

Not sure about the relevance of great debuts though, you would want to look at their progression over a number of games.

Schneider played at Port Melbourne, i know i was watching him in 36 and the raps on him were huge.

Add in the cost of the VFL Licence Fee, the cost of having to pay extra salaries for more backroom staff such as trainers and coaches, cost of having to pay salaries Top Up Players a full time VFL contract so they can live, train and play in Sydney and the cost of facilities for training, overnight stays at hotels in Melbourne, buses and playing equipment with VFL logos on them (jumpers and footballs).

So travel isn't the only cost we have to factor in and hence is the reason we are still in Canberra. If it was cheap or we could get the the AFL to help out somehow cost wise, then we would be in the VFL already.

Not at all, as the swans don't want this new comp because of the travel. I believe we are becoming a tad stale in our outlook, maybe a new coach with new ideas, not from our system for the last 8 years.

Gee, don't we have to travel to Canberra or is that just a short drive down the road:rolleyes:

The AFL has NEVER committed to the Eastern Seaboard Reserves Competition and was only a mooted idea that most on here liked the idea of, for logical reasons, but the AFL has moved away from the idea altogether and not because the Swans told them we don't want our reserves to travel. If that was the case, why didn't move at the same time to get our seniors to not to travel.....

Difference between the two is that we make money playing games at ANZ Stadium, hence why we play out there. But soon we won't be playing there 3 times a year, only playing GWS there and Collingwood.

Plus we won all 3 games at ANZ and our Reserves played in Canberra in 2005, yep that was certainly detremental to success:rolleyes:

Thanks for the reminder I was watching Barlows debut live not sure how I forgot that and yes remember Grundy taking some strong marks in the forward line and turning them into goals. My relevance (other than my bad habit of going off on a tangent) Was that if a player is carving it up in the reserves in a strong comp you would expect they would make a huge impact on debut. If they are carving it up in a lesser comp then probably expect those 5 or so possies until they get used to the pace.

Some players yes, some no. Every team in the comp has their reserves playing in a stronger league than ours (with the Lions being the most marginal difference) yet every club sees some debutants come in and look at home straight away and sustain it, some come in and blaze away in their first game or two and then go backwards for a while, and some struggle to pick up the pace for a handful of games.

Sometimes i wonder where you are coming from, Driver av. Whats best for our players, remember footy comes first. Maybe our club is becoming a little stale at the top and won't take any risks. Canberra is not a massive trip : also rolleyes.
Thats what this board and this thread is about--to debate issues relating to the Swans, none of us maybe right but don't just give your view like thats the end of the story for anyone else on here.

... watch this space ... the AFL have a little road show out and about right now "asking for feedback" about a proposed "Eastern Seaboard" 2nd tier comp including the 4 AFL ressies, a NT team and 4 ACT teams + any QAFL or SFL teams who "want to compete", which will be none as between them they can't afford the bus fares to the airport ... except maybe Southport.

In other words it is a done deal, and they do not care what impact it has on local AFL.

Not sure that Brisbane (and GC17) would want to jump from the QAFL to what is essentially the Canberra comp + NT.

Bit of a red herring I'm afraid

Josh Bruce, from Canberra club Eastlake, signs with GWS. (brother of ex-Swan rookie Aaron Bruce for the eagle-eyed)

Okay, further to the travel costs. All interstate trips by VFL clubs including the Gold Coast's 8 trips are all paid for up to 37 people, 23 players, 3 or 4 Coaches, trainors, physio's etc. any one over this number has to be paid for by that club which is usually 3 more staff. If the AFL can support this including GC why arn't we going to them for a support package for our ressies to travel. Will find out more this Saturday night.
