Interesting story in The Age 'Swans' player list goes under the knife'.

see here: http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/rf...under-the-knife/2009/08/06/1249350637885.html

Mentions Playfair, Ablett, Buchanan and quite a few others. Roos suggests "there are also some younger recruits, who through form or fitness have not made a significant impact, who will come under close scrutiny."

Good news is that "Jude Bolton, is about to sign a new one-year deal.", thats great for the club.:thumbsu:

Jude's only signing a one year deal? That's pretty interesting.

Yeah, I guess he is 29, and will be 30 at the beginning of the new footy season, so I think the 1 year contract is pretty normal for his age. However, IMHO, I would have at least given him a 2 year deal. I believe he is good for another 2 years at least. :thumbsu:

Seems Monty will be sticking around if having surgery has no bearing on his future. Means that even if he came back and was on fire they wouldn't change their mind, which means he's still in. May be traded though.

Ablett sounds like he may be on the outer, as is Malceski.

From the sounds of it DOK and Schmidt are gone.

Not sure how you draw that conclusion about Malceski. In an article earlier this week (mostly about Kennelly) Roos spoke very warmly and positively about Malceski. Don't think he will be going anywhere any time soon.

Im starting to feel the same way. Think Mal's 07 form is enough of a carrot for the Swans officials to keep him. Was starting to think NOG staying was getting more likely but that article says he could be in trouble, i do think Amon will be traded almost certainly.

Talking about younger players who haven't perfored this year and haven't played the games they should have... I draw the bow to guys like DOK, Schmidt, Malceski etc.

It's a shame Monty isn't playing like he did back in 2005

Amon was hot in 2005/2006 and has had some bright moments since but has been plagued with injuries, particularly this year. If he can get his knee right and have a full pre-season there's no reason he can't get back to similar form. Even Goodes was relatively ordinary between his brownlow years.

Ablett also had a poor pre-season and a number of injuries this year. He also has plenty of good footy in him. Neither player is old.

With the amount of youth coming into the side Roos would be looking to ensure he gets the balance of experience, stamina and hard bodies too. Most of the young guys who are good enough to cement a spot in the seniors have already done so. The rest will still get their chance if they show enough.

We could just completely clear out any 23+ fringe players and any 31+ players and draft big before the new teams come in.

Heres what I would do:

Already out:
Fosdike
Kennelly
O'Loughlin
Coney
Barry
Hall

My outs:
Ablett
Brabazon
Buchanan
Crouch
Laidlaw
Playfair
Schmidt

Close to going:
Barlow
Bevan
Kirk (retirement)
O'Dwyer
O'Keefe
Pyke?
Roberts-Thompson
Nick Smith

AND the second coming of a certain T.Kennelly.

You want to, at a minimum, draft 13 players?

and what did Nick Smith do to you?

I'm sorry, that's a really, really bad post.

I mean, over the past month Barlow has FINALLY shown something, and has been playing well, and you want him gone? Same with Nick Smith? And LRT, who's just had a career best year? And Pyke, who's been on the list once, with our only backup ruckman being two raw, young bodies?

You can't get rid of your entire ~25 your old group. They are in the first 22 when it best form, and at worst act as good depth players when we have injuries. Going in with nothing but over 30s and under 23s is very dangerous. Both those age groups are susceptible to injuries. Older guys with soft tissue, and young guys with bodies not hardened to AFL football. A few injuries, and we'd be totally stuffed.

Congratulations, that's the worst post I've read in a while. :thumbsu:

If Kennelly comes back is he still contracted to the Swans or will he have to go through the draft?

He is still on the Swans list, and therefore we can offer him a new contract if he comes back in 2010. Any time after 2010, we'd have to get him through the pre-season draft.

I personally hope he does not come back.

Eddie Barlow's close to going? First time I've heard about him leaving.

Also, since when Leo Barry has retired? Was there ever an announcement on that?

Said this would be his last year at the start of the year.

Talking of retirements it is with interest that I see the Bulldogs lost today to the WCE's. From the AFL's website, "Astoundingly, the Bulldogs went into the forward-arc 63 times to West Coast's 45 but still lost."

While the WC Eagles had 2 players that kicked 4 goals each, and 1 player who kicked 3, the best any Bulldog player could score was 2.

I would think that if the Bulldogs were considering recruiting BBB Barry Hall for 2010, today it would have become a certainty.

Have always suspected Hall would end up there after announcing he was quitting. Hopefully he retires at the end of next year and I don't have to see him line up against the Swans.
