RICHMOND is set to adopt Craigieburn as its home away from home as the Tigers look to expand training facilities.

The club is expected to oversee the construction of a top-quality ground in Melbourne's outer north for training and practice matches in a move that has thrilled locals.

A lack of access to Punt Rd Oval during cricket season and the historic ground's smaller dimensions have prompted the 25km move down the Hume Highway.

It is hoped an announcement will be made by AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou when he speaks at a Hume City Council business breakfast next Friday.

Richmond will maintain its administration and player facilities at Punt Rd, with its home of nearly 100 years due to undergo a major renovation.

"Because of the cricket pitches and the sze of the ground we can't play practice matches at Punt Rd," Richmond football director Greg Miller said.

"Clubs need a second venue and it's something we've been investigating for a while.

"It's a back-up venue, we're not moving. This will be used for training and practice matches and that sort of thing."

It is unclear how often Matthew Richardson, Nathan Brown and co. will have to make the 40-minute trek to get to the yet-to-be-determined oval.

Hume City Council mayor Gary Jungwirth, a life-long Richmond supporter, was excited at the prospect of the yellow and black preparing for battle in his region.

"I think any growing municipality with so many young families would like to have the opportunity to see top quality sport, whether it be football, cricket or soccer," Cr Jungwirth said.

"It's absolutely exciting and we're hoping, but there hasn't been a final determination yet."

Cr Jungwirth said Craigieburn was the perfect solution for the Tigers.

"There's plenty of land out here because it's a growth part of Melbourne and via the Tullamarine Freeway, Western Ring Road and Hume Freeway, it's very easy to get to," he said.

"But the council has signed nothing. It's gone to council for approval and it's awaiting agreement from all parties."

News of Richmond's potential move comes two days after St Kilda confirmed it would relocate to a $10 million world-class facility in Frankston.

Think this is a great idea from the club, if done right would enable the club to have another source of income. Only think I'm spewing about is I moved from Craigieburn a couple of years back, would have been great to just walk down the road and watch training with the kids.

GREAT idea!! love it!!:D
only cause im from craigieburn and im a lifelong tigers supporter.
if its too hard for the players to get down there is no point but if they want toplay AFL footy they may hav to make the commitment?

im looking at building a house. just didnt know where! i have family in Craigieburn but i think if this goes ahead it'll seal the deal.:D:thumbsu:

Great idea! We get a very real presence in an area with a huge population growth, miles away from any other AFL club. In this regard it's a lot like the Saints going to Frankston or Hawthorn to Waverley/Tasmania, and will do wonders for memberships and general marketing, but unlike those clubs we won't be giving up our spiritual home and presence in the area that bears our name.

Win a few new hearts and souls while keeping our own!

I wouldn't overstate this. It will probably just be an oval with some change rooms.

The key difference is that Coburg can't rid of their cricket club, and it costs a pretty penny to rent grounds like Sandringham or Victoria Park during the summer.

We just want an oval, any oval, where the surface is in good knick, there is no cricket pitch and we can get on it whenever we like.

Surely they can whack in some pokies though to up the dollars? I'm a northern suburbs lad, the desperados are always looking to improve their lifestyle on the ol' one arm bandits.

Yeah if they had half a brain they would chuck in a half decent restaurant bar and pokies, these joints are gold mines even if they are horrible places.

I'm a Croydon boy as well, and the dirty dorset gardens recent;y sold for about 20million, and that joint is an absolute shit heap

I assumed the article in the paper was a complete joke however it would appear it is true. I would be devastated if the blues were moving to some pathetic outer suburb. I would think a redevelopment like the Lexus centre or what Carlton are doing at MC L Park would be much better for the club and the fans.

Hey Magnificence,

please point to where it says we are moving from Punt Road.

A major redevelopment of Punt Road is happening next year anyway so we are getting both :thumbsu:

.

Bull$%#@ weaver, they'll be a couple hundred pokies thrown into the new social club that the tiger loving mayor has launched his support to, not too mention the Hollywood style TIGERLAND sign that could be seen from the air as the seatbelt sign go's on and the captain announces his descent into Melbourne. As long as Punt Rd remains the Mecca, a grand plan that will position us well to annex a growth part of Melbourne in yellow and Black

I bet the players are excited about a move 50 mins from Melbourne into some roots suburb.... must say i am dam jealous.... can carlton move to the outer subrubs

25min on the ring road beats an hour on Jetstar to the Gold Coast boofhead, careful where the league turns its attention once North reject the overtures, take your pick of the balance of clubs on welfare:p

It is really sad when a proud club like the tigers has to resort to giving up its spirtal home like punt road to move to some subrub at the wrong end of the ring road.

If I was a tigers player I would say guys this stinks!!!!

Richmond's two existing venues struggle to make it worth our while.

If we push for pockies there is every chance that the council would turn around and remove their support. Like you say they aren't that popular with the community and I think there is still a freeze on machine numbers?

sure about that weaver, todays Herald sun reported a turnover of 14mn at the clubs ...assuming a return in the order of at least 5% on that is ~700k

You;re right about the community sentiment building against pokies, Id be suprised if the local council sanctioned it, though you never know, could be some huge complex for the city of Hume
